Evolutionary Theory and the Ultimate–Proximate Distinction in the Human Behavioral Sciences [PDF]
To properly understand behavior, we must obtain both ultimate and proximate explanations. Put briefly, ultimate explanations are concerned with why a behavior exists, and proximate explanations are concerned with how it works. These two types of explanation are complementary and the distinction is critical to evolutionary explanation.

Editorial: Proximate and ultimate approaches to behavior in a changing world
[Extract] Tinbergen's (1963) classic four questions for the study of animal behavior have been applied across a range of study species and contexts and provide a solid foundation for understanding species' responses to rapid environmental change. Tinbergen's (1963) proximate questions include understanding the mechanisms (causation) and development ...

Ultimate Strain and Anisotropic Behavior in Corrugated Composites
In some applications such as morphing technology, high strain and anisotropic behavior are considered a good advantage. The corrugated composite sheets due to their special geometries have a potential of high deflection under axial loading.

Structural Behavior of High Strength Arched Reinforced Concrete Slabs
In the past, the arch represented one of the few structural systems which provide a possibility to cover large spans. Nowadays, the same importance is presented as the need increased with the increase of construction with large spans and with arched ...
