The Ultimate Strength of Glass Silica Nanowires

open access: yesNano Letters, 2009
In the past decade nanowires have attracted an increase interest because of their extraordinary mechanical strength. In fact, material properties in the nanoregime are extremely different from those found in macroscopic samples: few crystalline materials have shown a tensile strength in excess of 10 GPa in the form of nanowires.

Ultimate strength of corroded web-core sandwich beams [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Structures, 2013
The corrosive marine environment is a threat to the ultimate strength of steel sandwich structures. Therefore, ultimate strength experiments were carried out in three-point bending for beams with different corrosion exposure times, i.e. one and two years.

The ultimate strength of suture anchors

Arthroscopy, 1995
Abstract Suture anchors of various designs are gaining acceptance for open and arthroscopic procedures. The rapid proliferation of these devices challenges those using them to apply objective criteria for device selection. Comparative data on implant security in different settings, modes of failure, and ultimate failure strengths is ...

Ultimate-Strength Germanium Nanowires

Nano Letters, 2006
Semiconducting nanowires (NWs) are important "building blocks" for potential electrical and electromechanical devices. Here, we report on the mechanical properties of supercritical fluid-grown Ge NWs with radii between 20 and 80 nm. An analysis of the bending and tensile stresses during deformation and failure reveals that while the NWs have a Young's ...

Seismic Proving Test of Ultimate Piping Strength: Ultimate Strength Test

Seismic Engineering, Volume 2, 2004
The proving test of a large-scale piping system with a piping bore of 200A (8B) and made from carbon steel material was conducted to assure the safety margin of the current and new design codes for piping. Two test models were used, one for the design method confirmation test and one for the ultimate strength test.

Ultimate tensile strength of tooth structures

Dental Materials, 2004
This study determined the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of enamel (E), dentin (D) and dentin-enamel junction (DEJ) using the microtensile technique. It was hypothesized that the UTS of dental structures varies according to location and nature.Intact occlusal enamel surfaces from extracted human third molars were etched with 37% phosphoric acid and ...
