Mechanical Properties of Norway Spruce: Intra-Ring Variation and Generic Behavior of Earlywood and Latewood until Failure [PDF]

open access: yesBioResources 9 (1/2014) 105-119, 2015
The alternating earlywood and latewood growth ring structure has a strong influence on the mechanical performance of Norway spruce. In the current study, tensile tests in the longitudinal and tangential directions were performed on a series of specimens representing one growth ring at varying relative humidities.

4D Bioprinted Self‐Folding Scaffolds Enhance Cartilage Formation in the Engineering of Trachea

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, Volume 10, Issue 6, March 18, 2025.
A bilayer self‐folding scaffold, triggerable by humidity, is fabricated via 4D bioprinting for trachea engineering. An analytical model is derived to predict its radius of curvature, enabling its scalability. Cartilage progenitor cells seeded on the scaffold perceive scaffold final curvature and react to it, by enhancing the upregulation of pro ...

Enhancing Ceramic Structural and Interfacial Properties via Micro‐Patterning and Macro‐Architectural Integration

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This study investigates how laser‐micromachined patterns enhance the interfacial and mechanical properties of bioinspired ceramic composites. The ±45° micro‐pattern significantly improved interfacial bonding and damage dissipation energy by 107%, while integrating micro‐ and macro‐designs increased energy absorption by 60%.

Molecular Dynamics Study of the Mechanical Behavior of Few Layer Graphene [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2012
Atomistic simulation was performed to study the mechanical properties of few layer graphene (FLG) in conjunction with monlayer graphene (MLG) under uniaxial elongation by systematically increasing the layer number from one to six. We found that the ultimate tensile strength and strain increased in these FLGs for both zigzag and armchair-directional ...

Magnetic Actuation Under DC and AC Fields of Thermoplastic Polyurethane With Strontium Hexaferrite

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Magnetic thermoplastic polyurethane composites with strontium hexaferrite (SrFe12O19) are produced through a solvent‐free melt‐mixing technique. These composites display a magnetomechanical actuation mechanism, being able to deform (bend and twist) through DC and AC magnetic fields, showcasing their potential as a promising material for the fabrication

Synchrotron X-ray tomography investigation of 3D morphology of intermetallic phases and pores and their effect on the mechanical properties of cast Al-Cu alloys [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
The influence of Fe content on the three-dimensional (3D) morphology of Fe-rich intermetallic phases (Fe phases), Al2Cu, and pores and mechanical properties of cast Al-5.0Cu-0.6Mn alloys with 0.5 and 1.0 wt. % Fe are characterized using synchrotron X-ray tomography and a tensile test.
