How dense can one pack spheres of arbitrary size distribution?
We present the first systematic algorithm to estimate the maximum packing density of spheres when the grain sizes are drawn from an arbitrary size distribution. With an Apollonian filling rule, we implement our technique for disks in 2d and spheres in 3d.

Abstract This study investigates the impact of magnetic alignment of micro steel fibers (0.35%, 0.70%, and 1.05% contents) on the mechanical and electrical properties of fiber‐reinforced self‐compacting concrete. A simplified magnetic circuit was designed and built to align the fibers within the concrete matrix.

Abstract Structural health monitoring (SHM) research generates vast amount of information, especially as unstructured data formats. To date, most natural language processing (NLP) applications focus on extracting information (syntactic or semantic level) rather than providing latent knowledge and generating newer information (pragmatic level).

The influence of granite cutting waste on the properties of ultra-high performance concrete [PDF]
This study analyzes the effect of using waste by-products generated in the process of granite cutting as part of the granular structure of Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC). The manufactured concrete has a compressive strength greater than 115 MPa.

Abstract Point cloud‐based construction quality assessment and quality control (QA/QC) are playing an increasingly important role in large‐scale complex building projects. However, this approach faces several challenges, such as the laborious and time‐intensive process of manual point cloud segmentation, the high cost of point cloud labeling, and the ...

Mechanical Properties of Low-carbon Ultra-high Performance Concrete under Uniaxial Compression [PDF]
To tackle the high carbon emissions issue resulting from doubling the cement dosage in ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), a low-carbon ultra-high performance concrete (LC-UHPC) was developed by replacing a large proportion of Portland cement with ...

Finite Element Modeling of the Transition Zone between Aggregat and Mortar in Concrete [PDF]
Visual observations to the Interfacial Transition Zone (ITZ) between aggregate and mortar in concrete showed that this area differs significantly to the bulk mortar, further away from the ITZ.

Recent advances in embedded technologies and self‐sensing concrete for structural health monitoring
Abstract Fully embedded and spatially diffuse sensors are central to the advancement of civil and construction engineering. Indeed, they serve as an enabling technology necessary for addressing the current challenges associated with through‐life management and structural health monitoring of existing structures and infrastructures. The need to identify
