Tribochemical induced wear and ultra-low friction of superhard ta-C coatings

Wear, 2017
Abstract Employing a broad parameter study, friction and wear properties of amorphous carbon coatings (a-C), tetrahedral amorphous carbon coatings (ta-C) and single crystalline diamond were investigated in boundary lubrication regime, using an oscillating ball-on-flat test setup with engine oil, glycerol, and glycerol monooleate (GMO) lubrication ...

Transfer film evolution and its role in promoting ultra-low wear of a PTFE nanocomposite

Wear, 2013
Abstract Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is an important solid lubricant with an unusually high wear rate. For a half-century, fillers have been used to reduce PTFE wear by >100× with >10% loading through hypothesized mechanisms involving mechanical load support, crack arresting, and transfer film adhesion.

Tribofilm Formation and Run-In Behavior in Ultra-Low-Wearing Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and Alumina Nanocomposites

Tribology Transactions, 2014
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and alumina nanocomposites have been of great interest to the tribological community due to the significant reduction in wear imparted by filling PTFE with low weight percentages of alumina nanofillers. The mechanisms of these three order, four order, and sometimes five order of magnitude reductions in wear have been ...

Wear Resistance of Structural Steels Having Ultra-Low Carbon to High Carbon Concentration

2020
The tribological behavior of the different structural steels with carbon concentration ranging from 0.002 to 0.7% was evaluated through ball on disk wear testing method. Testing was carried out at three different loads, i.e., 30, 40, and 50 N to understand the wear behavior at different loading conditions.

Transfer Film Tenacity: A Case Study Using Ultra-Low-Wear Alumina–PTFE

Tribology Letters, 2015
The transfer film, a protective barrier that forms when a solid lubricant slides against a hard and high-surface-energy counterface, plays an important role in friction and wear reduction. The transfer films of many solid lubricants are removed and replenished during sliding.

A Novel Method for Quantitative Determination of Ultra-low Wear Rates of Materials, Part I: On Steels

Tribology Letters, 2008
A novel method for the quantitative determination of the wear of materials at very low wear rates is introduced here. The main concept involves implanting gold as a trace marker into the tested materials, and measuring the gold concentration and depth profile before and after the wear tests by Rutherford backscattering (RBS). The amount of gold loss is

Improving fuel economy without compromising wear and oxidative viscosity control in ultra-low viscosity engine oils

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2023
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The automotive industry is continuously looking to improve fuel economy in order to meet stringent government regulations around carbon emissions reduction. To achieve fuel economy targets, OEMs have explored lowering the viscosity of the engine oil to reduces energy losses. Many

A Novel Method for Quantitative Determination of Ultra-low Wear Rates of Materials, Part II: Effects of Surface Roughness and Roughness Orientation on Wear

Tribology Letters, 2008
A novel method of measurement of the very low wear-rates of materials in the ultra-mild wear regime, which involves the use of implanted gold as a marker, was used to understand the effects of surface roughness and roughness orientation on wear under reciprocating sliding conditions.
