Spin currents during ultrafast demagnetization of ferromagnetic bilayers

Ultrafast spin currents induced by femtosecond laser excitation of ferromagnetic metals have been found to contribute to sub-picosecond demagnetization, and to cause a transient enhancement of the magnetization of the bottom Fe layer in a Ni/Ru/Fe layered structure.

Saturation of the ultrafast laser-induced demagnetization in nickel

We show saturation of the sub-picosecond demagnetization in nickel at high excitation densities, conclude that spin relaxation is incomplete, and associate the demagnetization with collapse of the Stoner gap due to band filling effects.

Terahertz emission spectroscopy of ultrafast demagnetization in iron

We have observed ultrafast demagnetization of ferromagnetic metals after femtosecond pump pulse excitation by both transmission and emission spectroscopy. We observe demangtization occuring in iron with a 2 ps time constant.

Nanoscale Confinement Enhances Ultrafast Demagnetization

Nanoscale miniaturization has revolutionized the field of spintronics by enabling exponential growth in areal bit density. A similar leap is also expected in device speeds through successfully harnessing femtosecond magnetization dynamics. Ultrafast demagnetization in metallic ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic heterostructures

This thesis summarizes experimental work performed on thin-film metallic and magnetic systems by time-resolved soft X-ray reflectivity and magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. The delay-time-dependent magnetization dynamics in Co, Mn, and Ni after laser excitation are investigated in layered systems.
