Ultrafiltration of blood: Effect of hematocrit on ultrafiltration rate
Annals of Biomedical Engineering, 1976Rates of ultrafiltration of bovine blood of various hematocrits were measured in ultrafilters of hollow-fiber type. The results were analyzed by the gel-polarization model. The mass transfer coefficientk for the back-diffusion of protein molecules away from the gel layer, which controls the ultrafiltrate flux, increase with the cube root of the shear ...

Microdialysis and Ultrafiltration
1996Microdialysis and ultrafiltration are complementary sampling techniques that facilitate acquisition of data in awake, freely moving animals. Because the necessity of blood removal is eliminated, sampling frequency is not limited by animal size. The samples obtained by these techniques usually require no processing for analysis.

Current Protocols in Molecular Biology, 1998
AbstractThe first section of this unit describes dialysis of large‐ and small‐volume samples using cellulose membranes with pore sizes designed to exclude molecules above a selected molecular weight. A support protocol describes preparation of membranes for dialysis.

Simple Apparatus for Ultrafiltration
Science, 1962A rapid and highly efficient ultrafiltration apparatus has been devised from readily available laboratory materials costing less than $5. Employing a fritted glass tube to support an evacuated dialysis bag, it accommodates as little as 1 milliliter and is ideally suited to dialysis of small volumes and concentration of macromolecules for chromatography

Simple modified ultrafiltration
Perfusion, 2000After reviewing all available methods of modified ultrafiltration (MUF), an attempt was made to develop a more simplified approach to this beneficial method of post-bypass fluid removal by withdrawing blood from the right atrium and reinfusing into the aortic cannula (venoarterial). The simplicity of operation, ease of setup and analysis of hemoglobin,

Isothermic hemodialysis and ultrafiltration
American Journal of Kidney Diseases, 2000The increase in patient temperature during hemodialysis is explained by hemodynamic compensation during ultrafiltration and hypovolemia that leads to peripheral vasoconstriction and reduced heat losses. We analyzed 51 stable high-efficiency hemodialysis treatments in 27 patients during isothermic dialysis in which body temperature was maintained at a ...

Ultrafiltration in Heart Failure
Cardiology in Review, 2007Managing volume overload is essential for the treatment of symptomatic heart failure. Traditionally, it is achieved with oral and intravenous diuretics. Alternatively, the excess fluid can be removed via ultrafiltration. Modern technology has made this latter option more feasible than before for routine clinical practice.

Ultrafiltration and modified ultrafiltration in pediatric open heart operations
The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1993The capillary leak associated with cardiopulmonary bypass results in an increase in content of water in the tissues measurable by an increase in total body water after cardiac operation. Following work by Magilligan in the 1970s, ultrafiltration was introduced during bypass as a means of hemoconcentrating patients and potentially removing water from ...
