Predation strongly limits demography of a keystone migratory herbivore in a recovering transfrontier ecosystem. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2022
The paper provides the first quantitative characterization of the demography of the blue wildebeest population in western Zambia ‐ one of Africa’s largest remaining migrations. Predation was the dominant cause of mortality, and mortality risk varied with position along the migratory route.

Indexing body condition of bighorn sheep: potential for concordance among independent investigators?

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 47, Issue 3, September 2023., 2023
We explored the level of agreement among individuals who used palpation to index body condition of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). Preliminary results suggested the investigators interpreted and applied scoring criteria similarly, despite their differing backgrounds.

An interest‐based rights ethic for wildlife management and applications to behavioral training

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 4, Issue 3, March 2022., 2022
Abstract The growing field of conservation and wild animal ethics has the potential to guide practitioners facing difficult management decisions. Drawing from previously established rights frameworks, we explore an applied ethic for wildlife managers and conservationists, outlining when there can be ethical justification and moral obligation to ...

Full‐Field Displacement Measurements of Helicopter Rotor Blades Using Stereophotogrammetry

open access: yesInternational Journal of Aerospace Engineering, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
This study presents a stereophotogrammetry approach to achieve full‐field displacement measurements of helicopter rotor blades. The method is demonstrated in the wind tunnel test of a 2 m diameter rotor, conducted at the 5.5 m × 4 m Aeroacoustic Wind Tunnel of China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center (CARDC).

Bio-based hybrid cabin door of ultralight helicopter with variable-axis fiber design

open access: yesCEAS Aeronautical Journal, 2022
AbstractThis paper presents the development of an integrated technology concept for the production of semi-structural fiber composite aerospace components with a bio-based hybrid laminate structure. In this context, the high lightweight potential of a variable-axial hybrid fiber-reinforced laminates compared to a multiaxial laminate design is of ...
