High-power, ultrasonic fatigue testing machine

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1975
A machine capable of fatigue testing high strength alloys at an ultrasonic frequency (20 kHz), and a range of temperatures likely to be encountered by such materials in aerospace and power generation applications and in basic research, is described.

Direct ultrasonic visualization of fatigue cracks

NDT International, 1980
Abstract The advantages of direct ultrasonic visualization over conventional pulse-echo methods in detecting and characterizing fatigue cracks is demonstrated. It is shown that visualization is especially advantageous when the plane of the crack is not perpendicular to the ultrasound beam.

Fatigue Crack Characterization by Ultrasonic Inspection

Journal of Testing and Evaluation, 1990
Abstract The ultrasonic interrogation of components for the detection and sizing of defects has advantages over other techniques in that surface as well as subsurface defects can be probed. However, the phenomenon of crack closure or crack surface contact can reduce the detectability of a crack and lead to erroneous crack sizing.

Ultrasonic fatigue of Cu-single crystals

Scripta Metallurgica, 1984
Comparaison des courbes contrainte-deformation en presence ou non d'ultrasons. On observe une legere variation de la transition elastoplastique explicable par le fait que la contrainte mecanique, de traction ou de compression, en fatigue, est mal definie en presence d ...

Ultrasonic Evaluation of Composite Fatigue Damage

1994
Damage in composite materials has been detected using ultrasonic nondestructive techniques.1–5 These studies were all performed on thin composite samples subjected to either a quasi-static tensile force or a constant amplitude tensile fatigue load. Changes in basic ultrasonic parameters, attenuation or velocity, were used as an indicator of damage ...

Ultrasonic Characterization of Fatigue Crack Closure

1993
The characterization of fatigue crack closure is an important objective because of its influence on fatigue crack propagation, particularly under conditions of variable amplitude loading. This paper describes a nontraditional technique for characterizing closure, in which ultrasonic scattering measurements are used to obtain estimates of the number ...

Nonlinear ultrasonic characterization of fatigue microstructures

International Journal of Fatigue, 2001
Dislocation dipole substructures formed during metal fatigue are shown to produce a substantial distortion of ultrasonic waves propagating through the fatigued material. A model of ultrasonic wave-dislocation dipole interactions is developed that quantifies the wave distortion by means of a material nonlinearity parameter (beta).

Laser ultrasonic absorption measurement in fatigue-damaged materials

Ultrasonics, 2002
Changes in the materials microstructure caused by fatigue processes affect the ultrasonic absorption. Thus, quantitative measurement of the ultrasonic absorption should provide an indirect measure of fatigue damage. In this paper we present a study of the ultrasonic absorption in fatigue-damaged metals using the reverberation technique in combination ...

Gigacycle Fatigue Behavior by Ultrasonic Nanocrystalline Surface Modification

Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, 2012
Nanocrystalline surface layer up to 84 microm in thick is produced on a specimen made of Al6061-T6 alloy by means of surface treatment called ultrasonic nanocrystalline surface modification (UNSM) technique. The refined grain size is produced in the top-layer and it is increased with increasing depth from the top surface.

Ultrasonic Fatigue Testing of Ti-6Al-4V

Journal of ASTM International, 2005
Abstract The objective of this research was to investigate the high cycle fatigue behavior of a titanium alloy using an ultrasonic fatigue system. Fatigue testing up to one billion cycles under fully reversed loading conditions was performed to determine the ultra-high cycle fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V.
