Combining Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity and Nonlinear Ultrasonic Techniques to Assess Concrete Strength

Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation, Diagnostics and Prognostics of Engineering Systems
Abstract Nonlinear ultrasonics (NLU) has grown in importance over the past years. The viability of applying the newly developed NLU technique called the Sideband Peak Count-Index (SPC-I) to estimate the 28-day unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of cylindrical concrete specimens is investigated.

The Dispersion of Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity in Cylindrical Rods

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1954
Velocity dispersion of compressional stress waves in cylindrical rods of 61S-T6 aluminum alloy has been investigated experimentally. Electronically generated pulses of the desired shape and carrier frequency were used to drive the barium titanate and quartz transducers. Both the pulse echo and pulse transmission methods were employed. It was found that

Variability in Rock Strength Prediction Using Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity

Advanced Materials Research, 2011
Three rocks - biotite granite, dolerite, and marble - were studied for the use of ultrasonic pulse velocity in predicting their uniaxial compressive strength. The rocks differed in mineralogy, texture, and strength. The mineralogy and texture influence to varying degree the strength and the pulse velocity.

Inspection of Concrete Using Air-Coupled Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity

ACI Materials Journal, 2010
This paper will discuss how the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) method has been used for decades to characterize concrete structures. In this method, ultrasonic transducers are attached to the concrete surface using a coupling agent. The coupling process is both time and labor intensive and, in some cases, may limit the ability to collect data.
