Piezoelectric ultrasonic vibrations provide rotary or linear motion in ultrasonic motors by means of friction. A larger force/torque is obtained from ultrasonic motors than from conventional electromagnetic devices of the same weight. The basic principles of linear and rotary motors that consist of two orthogonal vibrations are introduced.

Publisher Summary Physicists and acoustic engineers tend to discuss sound pressure levels in terms of frequencies, partly because this is how ears interpret sound. There are more advanced developments in the field and basic principles are dissected and utilized to address more specific needs of this ever-growing industry.
