Endosonography is primarily a diagnostic imaging modality, but new therapeutic applications are being developed. Miniprobe technology (ultrasound catheter probes) has led to new clinical applications. The staging of gastrointestinal cancers remains the major accepted indication for endosonography.

This paper reviews diagnostic applications of ultrasound to dentistry, or dental ultrasonography, beginning with pioneering work of the 1960s up through present lines of research. Clinical, in vivo applications that are of direct interest to dental practice are reviewed here, including measurements of enamel thickness and periodontal pocket depth.

EUS has many advantages over x-ray and other endoscopic procedures for the detection of lesions located in the wall of the GI tract. In the oesophagus, invasion of cancer and spread to lymph nodes can be visualized by EUS before surgery. In the stomach, the invasion depth of cancer and the therapeutic effect of laser irradiation to early cancer can be ...

Ascites is usually not difficult to detect with ultrasonography because of its characteristic lack of echoes. However, minimal or lobulated collections of fluid or unusual distributions due to anatomical variations or associated pathological processes may create problems in diagnosis.

Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) is a noninvasive, bedside, portable tool for assessment of cerebral hemodynamics. Modern TCD head frames allow continuous hands-free emboli detection for risk stratification and assessment of treatment efficacy in several cardiovascular diseases. Identifying a focal stenosis, arterial occlusion, and monitoring

Ultrasonography and the more recently developed technique of computerized tomography (see the preceding chapter) should be used concurrently in the evaluation and diagnosis of suspected orbital pathology. Ultrasonography is easily performed and safe; it has no known complications or contraindications.
