Oxidative stress mediated by gyrophoric acid from the lichen Umbilicaria hirsuta affected apoptosis and stress/survival pathways in HeLa cells

open access: yesBMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2019
Background Lichens produce a huge diversity of bioactive compounds with several biological effects. Gyrophoric acid (GA) is found in high concentrations in the common lichen Umbilicaria hirsuta, however evidence for biological activity was limited to ...

Diethylcarbamazine Reduces Chronic Inflammation and Fibrosis in Carbon Tetrachloride- (CCl4-) Induced Liver Injury in Mice

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, 2014
This study investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of DEC on the CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in C57BL/6 mice. Chronic inflammation was induced by i.p. administration of CCl4 0.5 μL/g of body weight through two injections a week for 6 weeks. DEC (50 mg/

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

Inner ear tissue preservation by rapid freezing: Improving fixation by high-pressure freezing and hybrid methods. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In the preservation of tissues in as 'close to life' state as possible, rapid freeze fixation has many benefits over conventional chemical fixation. One technique by which rapid freeze-fixation can be achieved, high pressure freezing (HPF), has been ...

Elastin calcification during the initial stage of vascular calcification in kl/kl mice is suppressed by the calcimimetic upacicalcet

open access: yesScientific Reports
We performed ultrastructural analyses of the aortae of klotho-deficient (kl/kl) mice to characterize the early stages of medial calcification and to evaluate the inhibitory effects of the calcimimetic upacicalcet.

Ultrastructure of the esthesioneuroblastoma [PDF]

open access: yesCancer, 1976
A tumor in the anatomic location and with the light microscopic appearance of an esthesioneuroblastoma was examined with the electron microscope. Secretory-type granules, cytoplasmic fibrils, and microtubules similar to those described in neuroblastomas were found in many of the tumor cells, which supports an origin from the sympathetic autonomic ...

Accurate and noninvasive prostate cancer detection using plasma‐derived extracellular vesicle RNA

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plasma extracellular vesicles were captured with WGA‐conjugated magnetic beads and profiled for RNA biomarkers. A three‐RNA panel (NM_024955, NR_047469, and NR_002564) distinguished prostate cancer from healthy controls and benign prostatic hyperplasia, supporting a simple, noninvasive approach to improve prostate cancer detection.

New Data on Nephron Microanatomy and Ultrastructure of Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus)

open access: yesBiology, 2022
This study presents new data on the microanatomy and ultrastructure of Polypterus senegalus nephrons. It was shown that the diameter and ultrastructure of renal corpuscles, a well-developed neck segment, and ultrastructure of two types of epithelial ...

Melanin's Role in Balancing Mechanical Strength and Reproductive Output in Environmentally Stressed Fungal Spores

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Melanin content directly controls fungal spore mechanical properties, with pigmented spores achieving rupture forces two orders of magnitude higher than hyaline spores. Environmental stress drives this quantity‐quality tradeoff; stressed species invest energy in melanin‐reinforced, mechanically superior thick‐walled, super‐hydrophobic spores, while ...
