Lysyl oxidase (LOX)‐mediated remodeling of the extracellular matrix

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The lysyl oxidase (LOX) family of enzymes drives extracellular matrix remodeling by oxidizing collagen, elastin, and fibronectin, promoting covalent cross‐link formation. This activity regulates tissue architecture and mechanical properties, while its dysregulation contributes to fibrosis, cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, connective tissue disorders ...

Elastin calcification during the initial stage of vascular calcification in kl/kl mice is suppressed by the calcimimetic upacicalcet

open access: yesScientific Reports
We performed ultrastructural analyses of the aortae of klotho-deficient (kl/kl) mice to characterize the early stages of medial calcification and to evaluate the inhibitory effects of the calcimimetic upacicalcet.

Ultrastructure expansion microscopy in Trypanosoma brucei. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
The recently developed ultrastructure expansion microscopy (U-ExM) technique allows us to increase the spatial resolution within a cell or tissue for microscopic imaging through the physical expansion of the sample.

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

New Data on Nephron Microanatomy and Ultrastructure of Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus)

open access: yesBiology, 2022
This study presents new data on the microanatomy and ultrastructure of Polypterus senegalus nephrons. It was shown that the diameter and ultrastructure of renal corpuscles, a well-developed neck segment, and ultrastructure of two types of epithelial ...

Accurate and noninvasive prostate cancer detection using plasma‐derived extracellular vesicle RNA

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plasma extracellular vesicles were captured with WGA‐conjugated magnetic beads and profiled for RNA biomarkers. A three‐RNA panel (NM_024955, NR_047469, and NR_002564) distinguished prostate cancer from healthy controls and benign prostatic hyperplasia, supporting a simple, noninvasive approach to improve prostate cancer detection.

Changes of leaf antioxidant system, photosynthesis and ultrastructure in tea plant under the stress of fluorine

open access: yes, 2011
Seedlings of Camellia sinensis were grown hydroponically for 30 d in order to study the effect of fluorine (F) on growth parameters, antioxidant defence system, photosynthesis and leaf ultrastructure. Fresh and dry mass, chlorophyll (Chl) content and net

Melanin's Role in Balancing Mechanical Strength and Reproductive Output in Environmentally Stressed Fungal Spores

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Melanin content directly controls fungal spore mechanical properties, with pigmented spores achieving rupture forces two orders of magnitude higher than hyaline spores. Environmental stress drives this quantity‐quality tradeoff; stressed species invest energy in melanin‐reinforced, mechanically superior thick‐walled, super‐hydrophobic spores, while ...

The Effect of the Synergistic Combination of Vitamin D and Doxorubicin on the MCF-7 Line Breast Cancer Cells

open access: yesBiology and Life Sciences Forum, 2023
Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in the female population. The prolonged action of estrogen may affect tumor proliferation. Additionally, a fat-rich diet may have various effects on cancer proliferation, depending on the type of fat. Vitamin D,
