Mapping residual organics and carbonate at grain boundaries and in the amorphous interphase in mouse incisor enamel

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2015
Dental enamel has evolved to resist the most grueling conditions of mechanical stress, fatigue, and wear. Adding insult to injury, it is exposed to the frequently corrosive environment of the oral cavity.

Transcriptome Analysis of Gene Expression Patterns Potentially Associated with Premature Senescence in Nicotiana tabacum L.

open access: yesMolecules, 2018
Senescence affects the remobilization of nutrients and adaption of the plant to the environment. Combined stresses can result in premature senescence in plants which exist in the field.

Zika virus infection induces ultrastructural alterations, mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress in human trophoblast HTR-8/SVneo

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology
BackgroundZika fever gained importance in Brazil in 2015 due to its association with congenital syndrome. Although Zika virus (ZIKV) crosses the placenta and infects the fetus, its pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. This study investigated the

The ultrastructure of Toxoplasma gondii

open access: yes, 2007
This chapter reviews the electron microscopic data on Toxoplasma gondii and its life-cycle stages. There are four invasive forms of T. gondii: the tachyzoite, bradyzoite, merozoite, and sporozoite. Tachyzoites and bradyzoites are associated with the intermediate host, and merozoites and sporozoites with the definitive host.

Opantimirs: A class of antagonizing microRNAs that upregulate Opa1 and improve mitochondrial and disuse myopathies

open access: yesCell Reports Medicine
Summary: Alterations in mitochondrial ultrastructure and reduced levels of the crista-shaping protein Opa1 are key features of mitochondrial myopathies and aging.
