Careful examination of the umbilical cord at its point of entry into the infant in a consecutive series of 2,000 live births revealed an incidence of 0.3 per cent of single umbilical artery. There was no correlation with renal anomalies. Two of the six infants with single umbilical artery had 16–18 trisomy.
