Passive damping to attenuate snap loading on a ROV umbilical cable

Proceedings of OCEANS '93, 2002
Summary form only given. Snap loading of the umbilical cable connecting a ship to a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and its cage is a major problem when the ROV system is operating in rough sea conditions. Snap loading is the instantaneous, high magnitude, tensile loading of a cable.

Accumulated Plastic Strain Evaluation of Steel Tube for Umbilical Cables

Volume 3: Pipeline and Riser Technology; Ocean Space Utilization, 2008
This paper presents the tests performed for the qualification of the level of accumulated plastic strain (APS) to be respected by manufacturing and installation of SAF 2507 steel tube umbilicals. The manufacturing and installation processes for steel tube umbilicals are carried out through repetitive cycles of coiling and uncoiling the tubes or ...

Calculation of Vibrations in a Tethered Underwater Vehicle–Umbilical Cable System

Journal of Machinery Manufacture and Reliability, 2020
This article highlights the main factors that determine the oscillation process of an umbilical cable–tethered underwater vehicle system. Cable systems are widespread in various fields of technology: aircraft cable rigging, parachute systems, suspension bridge supports, marine terminal cables, and so on.

Design and installation of subsea cable, pipeline and umbilical crossing interfaces

Engineering Failure Analysis, 2017
Abstract Deterioration of subsea cable, pipeline and umbilical crossings often occur due to relative movement between the crossing members. Any crossing design should aim to achieve a sound, fit for purpose solution that will be maintenance free over the crossing life.

Three-Dimensional Dynamic Behavior of the Flexible Umbilical Cable System

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013
We extend an idea of the modeling flexible umbilical cable using a nonlinear finite element method to three-dimensional space. The umbilical cable is assembled by Reissners geometrically exact beam elements, which take account of the geometric nonlinearities of large rotation and displacement, and effects of axial load, transverse shear, torsion and ...

Some Problems Involving Umbilicals, Cables and Pipes

1985
During recent years a number of companies have grown up in the Aberdeen area designing and developing diving bells, mobile diving units (MDU’s), remotely operated inspection vehicles etc. to meet the increasing need for subsea inspection of pipelines and other offshore installations.

On the motions of the underwater remotely operated vehicle with the umbilical cable effect

Ocean Engineering, 2007
Abstract In this paper, a hydrodynamic model is developed to simulate the six degrees of freedom motions of the underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) including the umbilical cable effect. The corresponding hydrodynamic forces on the underwater vehicle are obtained by the planar motion mechanism test technique.

On the flexural structural behaviour of flexible pipes, umbilicals and marine cables

Marine Structures, 1992
Abstract A general analytical model to predict the flexural structural behaviour of multiple layer flexible structures such as flexible pipes, umbilicals and amrine cables is presented. The flexural response of these structures is shown to be dominated by relative movement between component layers once a critical curvature has been exceeded.

A Study on the Dynamics of Marine Umbilical Cable for Underwater Vehicle

2016
The dynamics of underwater umbilical cable (UC) for underwater vehicle (UV) are an important in ocean engineering. These UC are widely used in the ocean environment for signal and power transmission application. To apply the cable to power and data transmission for small UV, the dynamics of the UC are studied in the paper.
