Effect on cesarean section babies of stripping or milking of the umbilical cords

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1952
Abstract Of 100 cesarean section babies, one-half had the customary immediate clamping and cutting of the umbilical cords. With the other 50 the cords were rapidly but thoroughly milked or stripped toward the babies before ligation. There was no ill effect from this procedure. In the first group the average hemoglobin reading was 15.9 Gm. per 100 c.c.

Timing of Umbilical Cord Clamping and Cord Milking and Preterm Infant Outcomes

Nursing for Women's Health
Deferred cord clamping, also referred to as delayed cord clamping, has been identified as an intervention to reduce mortality before discharge in preterm infants. This practice has been associated with several benefits for neonates. In this short review, we summarize two research studies on the effects of cord clamp timing. In the first study, deferred

Umbilical Cord Milking in Term Infants: Blood Volume Associated With Cut and Intact Umbilical Cords [23M]

Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2017
INTRODUCTION: Placental-to-newborn transfusion through delayed cord clamping and umbilical cord milking (UCM) is associated with reduced risk of transfusion, intraventricular hemorrhage, and necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants, and increased iron stores in term infants. Total blood volume (BV) transferred during UCM is

Effects of Umbilical Cord Milking on Term Infants Delivered by Cesarean Section

American Journal of Perinatology, 2020
Abstract Objective Umbilical cord milking (UCM) is an efficient way to achieve optimal placental transfusion in term infants born by cesarean section (CS). However, it is not frequently performed due to concern for short-term adverse effects of increased blood volume, such as polycythemia and hyperbilirubinemia.

Effect of umbilical cord milking: Upadhyay et al

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2013
156 American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology Optimal timing of cord clamping is a subject that has garnered much interest recently. Potential benefits of delayed cord clamping, occurring some 30-60 seconds after birth rather than the usual 15-20 seconds after birth, include increases in newborns’ blood volume and hemoglobin level In December, 2012 ...

Neonatal Outcomes Associated with Umbilical Cord Milking in Preterm Multiple Gestations

American Journal of Perinatology, 2019
Objective Our aim was to evaluate the effect of umbilical cord milking on outcomes for preterm multiples. Study Design We implemented a policy of cord milking in neonates born at less than 30 weeks' gestation in September 2011. We compared cord milking in multiples with a historical cohort.

Umbilical cord milking at birth for term newborns with acidosis: neonatal outcomes

Journal of Perinatology, 2017
To determine if umbilical cord milking is detrimental in compromised term/near-term infants.A retrospective analysis of infants with abnormal cord gases (cord arterial or venous pH of ≤ 7.1 or base deficit > -12). We collected maternal risk factors, cord management, birth, and neonatal outcomes during hospitalization. We found 157 infants who met the ...
