Umbilical cord milking at birth for term newborns with acidosis: neonatal outcomes
To determine if umbilical cord milking is detrimental in compromised term/near-term infants.A retrospective analysis of infants with abnormal cord gases (cord arterial or venous pH of ≤ 7.1 or base deficit > -12). We collected maternal risk factors, cord management, birth, and neonatal outcomes during hospitalization. We found 157 infants who met the ...

The Effects of Umbilical Cord Milking on Hemodynamics and Neonatal Outcomes in Premature Neonates
Journal of Pediatrics, 2014To determine whether umbilical cord milking (UCM) improves systemic blood flow and reduces neonatal morbidities compared with immediate cord clamping (ICC).Women admitted to a tertiary care center and delivering before 32 weeks' gestation were randomized to receive UCM or ICC.

Is umbilical cord milking always an advantage?
The Journal of Maternal-Fetal & Neonatal Medicine, 2015The role of cord milking as an alternative to delayed cord clamping is an area that requires more research. Purpose of this clinical trial was to investigate the impact of umbilical cord milking on the absolute neutrophil counts (ANCs) and the neutropenia frequency of preterm infants.Fifty-eight pregnant women were randomly assigned to one of the ...

Objective This study aimed to assess potential benefits of umbilical cord milking (UCM) when compared with immediate cord clamping (ICC) in extremely preterm infants. Study Design This is a single-center, randomized controlled trial of infants 240/7 to 276/7 weeks' gestation who received UCM versus ICC.

Zinc levels in human milk and umbilical cord blood
Science of The Total Environment, 1996Zinc levels were determined in human milk and umbilical cord blood samples collected in the Rijeka Clinical Hospital during the period from September 1995 to January 1996. The average concentrations of zinc were 4.98 +/- 2.53 mg/l in breast milk (range: 1.69-11.60 mg/l) and 1.18 +/- 0.21 mg/l in umbilical cord blood (range: 0.87-1.91 mg/l).

Effect on cesarean section babies of stripping or milking of the umbilical cords
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1952Abstract Of 100 cesarean section babies, one-half had the customary immediate clamping and cutting of the umbilical cords. With the other 50 the cords were rapidly but thoroughly milked or stripped toward the babies before ligation. There was no ill effect from this procedure. In the first group the average hemoglobin reading was 15.9 Gm. per 100 c.c.

Timing of Umbilical Cord Clamping and Cord Milking and Preterm Infant Outcomes
Nursing for Women's HealthDeferred cord clamping, also referred to as delayed cord clamping, has been identified as an intervention to reduce mortality before discharge in preterm infants. This practice has been associated with several benefits for neonates. In this short review, we summarize two research studies on the effects of cord clamp timing. In the first study, deferred
