Endometriosis of the umbilicus

Abstract 1. 1. Endometriosis of the umbilicus is a relatively rare entity, sixty-eight cases being reported until the end of 1935. 2. 2. Review of some of the literature is presented. 3. 3. Histogenesis of endometriosis of the umbilicus is discussed. 4. 4. Two cases are presented with a description of surgical and pathologic findings.

Endometriosis of the Umbilicus

A 39-year-old woman with a history of prolonged and excessive vaginal bleeding and bleeding from the umbilicus was found to have umbilical endometriosis. The umbilicus was excised following hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Umbilical endometriosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of umbilical lesions.

Endometriosis of the Umbilicus

Endometriosis is a common phenomenon. Most cases reported are pelvic endometriosis which cause typical symptoms. Cutaneous endometriosis is rare, usually appearing in surgical scars or following surgical procedures. Umbilical endometriosis can occur after surgery but is generally spontaneous.

PAPILLOMA OF THE UMBILICUS

Ficarra 1 recently reported a case of umbilical papilloma, referring to Reder's 2 report of the 13th case and to 12 cases in Cullen's 3 textbook "Diseases of the Umbilicus." This entity has not been frequently reported. The following clinical report is presented as the 15th recorded case.
