Annual variation of temperature and mass balance of first-year and second-year land-fast sea ice in Prydz Bay, East Antarctica

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology
The evolution of the temperature and mass balance of first-year (FYI: Site S1) and second-year (SYI: Site S2) land-fast sea ice (LFSI) in May–November were investigated using high-resolution thermistor-string-based ice mass balance buoys, borehole ...

Groundwater Rise Sustains the World's Largest Alpine Water System Under Global Warming

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Shallow groundwater depth (SGWD) across the non‐permafrost plains of the Qinghai–Xizang Plateau decreased at averagely 0.02 m year−1, adding 31.44 Gt of freshwater storage from 2000 to 2020 and sustaining ∼53 500 km2 of alpine ecosystems. A vadose‐zone capacity of 426.6 Gt reveals these aquifers as promising reservoirs, highlighting groundwater's ...

Gender and small-scale fisheries in Brazil: insights for a sustainable development agenda

open access: yesOcean and Coastal Research, 2022
The role of women in the fisheries sector is largely underestimated and underreported. Although women are a fundamental part of the seafood supply chain in Brazil, fisheries management is gender-biased; sectoral programs and policies fail to recognize ...

Advancing Energy Efficiency in Smart Windows via Dual‐Responsive Electro‐Thermochromism

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A durable and stable quasi‐solid‐state electro‐thermal dual‐responsive photothermal regulation device has been employed in advanced energy‐efficient smart windows. The devised device not only incorporates a thermochromic hydrogel characterized by high ionic conductivity, high optical transmittance, and a low LCST, but also comprises an electrochromic ...

Technological Trends and Significance of the Essential Ocean Variables by the Indian Moored Observatories: Relevance to UN Decade of Ocean Sciences

open access: yesMarine Technology Society Journal, 2021
Abstract The ocean plays a key role in regulating the climate as well as supporting diverse ecosystems. Technology is the key for the sustained and precise in-situ spatio-temporal measurements of the physical, biological, biogeochemical, and near-atmospheric meteorological parameters essential for carrying out effective assessments of the status ...

Cavity‐Enhanced Eye‐Readable Detection of 0.1% H2 via Active Modulation of Charge‐Transfer Plasmons

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A cavity‐structured nanoparticle sensor is developed for highly sensitive, eye‐readable hydrogen detection. Its excellent colorimetric response arises from a hydrogen‐induced charge‐transfer mechanism: reduction of the dielectric oxide shell in H2 triggers a transition from the plasmonic gap mode to the charge‐transfer plasmon mode.

Bridging Horizontal to Vertical Radiative Cooling

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Radiative cooling materials are mature but only work facing the sky, confining them to rooftops. Instead of developing new ones, this system bridges existing horizontal coolers to vertical windows using blades outside the glass. On an occupied urban building, windows stay up to 1.4°C below air temperature while preserving daylight, outward views, and ...
