Saturation in synchronous generators during unbalanced faults

Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2004 (IEEE Cat. No.04CH37513), 2004
This paper investigates the effects of the non-uniform air gap saturation of a salient pole synchronous generator during a single phase to ground short circuit at its terminal. The accurate representation of magnetic saturation effects in synchronous machines is important when studying their behavior closely.

Performances of the fault decoupling device when unbalanced and multiple faults occur on distribution systems

18th International Conference and Exhibition on Electricity Distribution (CIRED 2005), 2005
Nowadays industrial processes are largely based on electronic devices such as programmable logic controllers and adjustable speed drives. Consequently, industrial equipments became less tolerant towards power supply disturbances. Voltage dips due to faults are surely among the worst disturbances for industrial equipments.

Constant power control of wind turbines during unbalanced faults

2013 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics, 2013
This paper includes a control strategy for the fault-ride-through performance of wind turbines connected to the grid by means of fully rated converter. The proposed control strategy does not require the use of PLLs or FLLs for grid connection. The effects of the proposed control strategy on the low speed shaft and the gearbox has been studied on the ...

Unbalanced-Grid-Fault Ride-Through Control for a Wind Turbine Inverter

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2007
Large variable speed wind turbines with fully rated, direct-in-line converters are increasingly used as silicon cost continues to decline. While grid codes require wind turbines to ride-through grid faults, including unbalanced faults, voltage source inverters interfaced to the grid are inherently sensitive to any unbalance in the a.c. voltage.

Unbalanced Underground Distribution Systems Fault Detection and Section Estimation

2007
This paper presents a novel fault detection and section estimation method for unbalanced underground distribution systems (UDS). The method proposed is based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) and wavelet transforms (WTs). The majority of UDS are characterized by having several single/double phase laterals and non-symmetrical lines.

Unbalanced faults analysis in grid - Connected PV system

2014 IEEE International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon), 2014
A search for replacement of non-renewable energy leads to a new founding that is renewable energy which is unlimited energy source. One of the renewable energy is solar energy where photovoltaic (PV) array is used to convert the energy from the sun to electrical energy. PV is widely use in the grid-connected system nowadays.

The Detection of Unbalanced Faults in Inverter-Fed Induction Machines

2007 IEEE International Symposium on Diagnostics for Electric Machines, Power Electronics and Drives, 2007
Fault diagnosis of electrical machines has primarily been focused on steady state operation of the machine due to the limitations in signal processing techniques. However, the advancement in this area has led to the development of a new class of algorithms which are time-frequency based signal processing techniques. In this paper we explore the concept

Online fault detection and isolation using unbalanced residuals

Proceedings of the 38th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (Cat. No.99CH36304), 2003
This paper presents a FDI method based on standardized unbalanced residuals which are generated from the nodal imbalances of a process modeled by balance equations. The fault detection task is performed using a statistical test. The fault isolation decision maker proposed here is based on fault signatures and has the goal to reduce the rate of false ...

Unbalanced Fault Diagnosis in Transmission Networks Using Multiple Model Filters

2018 Annual American Control Conference (ACC), 2018
This paper provides a scalable solution to the diagnosis of unbalanced transmission faults. The solution hinges on our previous work on diagnosis of balanced transmission faults using multiple model filters (MMF). The purpose of diagnosis is to support a secondary protection that capitalizes on new sensing technologies to cost-effectively mitigate ...
