Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo Under Natural Illumination

2018 IEEE/CVF Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, 2018
This paper presents a photometric stereo method that works with unknown natural illuminations without any calibration object. To solve this challenging problem, we propose the use of an equivalent directional lighting model for small surface patches consisting of slowly varying normals, and solve each patch up to an arbitrary rotation ambiguity.

Binocular Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo

2006
In Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo (UPS), the surface normals and light sources are determined up to a group of ambiguous Generalized Bas-Relief (GBR) transformations. However, it has been shown by previous works to be rather troublesome to solve these ambiguities. In this paper, a framework of Binocular Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo (B-UPS) is given

Patch-Based Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo Under Natural Illumination

IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 2022
This paper presents a photometric stereo method that works with unknown natural illumination without any calibration objects or initial guess of the target shape. To solve this challenging problem, we propose the use of an equivalent directional lighting model for small surface patches consisting of slowly varying normals, and solve each patch up to an

Fast 3D face reconstruction based on uncalibrated photometric stereo

Multimedia Tools and Applications, 2013
This paper proposes a fast algorithm for three-dimensional face reconstruction using uncalibrated Photometric Stereo. With a reference face model, lighting parameters are estimated from input face images lighted by unknown illumination, which can be used in classical photometric stereo to estimate surface normal and albedo.

Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo Using Quadric Surfaces with Two Cameras

2020
Inverse rendering is a method for estimating object shapes and lighting conditions from a set of images. In the present paper, we propose an uncalibrated photometric stereo method that approximates the shapes of the target objects using quadric surfaces (ellipsoids or hyperboloids), and this shape representation allows us to use multiple cameras in ...

Shape-from-Shifting: Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo with a Mobile Device

2017 IEEE 13th International Conference on e-Science (e-Science), 2017
Surface shape scanning techniques, such as laser scanning and photometric stereo, are widespread analytical tools used in the field of cultural heritage. Compared to regular 2D RGB photos, 3D surface scans provide higher fidelity of an object's surface shape which assist conservators, art historians, and archaeologists in understanding how these ...

Fusing Multiview and Photometric Stereo for 3D Reconstruction under Uncalibrated Illumination

IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, 2011
We propose a method to obtain a complete and accurate 3D model from multiview images captured under a variety of unknown illuminations. Based on recent results showing that for Lambertian objects, general illumination can be approximated well using low-order spherical harmonics, we develop a robust alternating approach to recover surface normals ...

In Search of an Optimal Set of Images for Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo

2008 Seventh Mexican International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, 2008
In this paper, we draw on the ideas of previous work done by Drbohlav and Chantler [5], where a theoretical study on the optimal lighting configuration for photometric stereo was developed. They demonstrated that the known n light source azimuth angles should be equally spaced over 360/n degrees and the n light source elevation angles should be ...

A closed-form solution to uncalibrated photometric stereo via diffuse maxima

2012 IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, 2012
In this paper we propose a novel solution to uncalibrated photometric stereo. Our approach is to eliminate the so-called generalized bas relief (GBR) ambiguity by exploiting points where the Lambertian reflection is maximal. We demonstrate several noteworthy properties of these maxima: 1) Closed-form solution: A single diffuse maximum constrains the ...
