Statistical disaggregation—A Monte Carlo approach for imputation under constraints

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Statistics, EarlyView.
Abstract Equality‐constrained models naturally arise in problems in which the measurements are taken at different levels of resolution. The challenge in this setting is that the models usually induce a joint distribution which is intractable. Resorting to instead sampling from the joint distribution by means of a Monte Carlo approach is also ...

How Does Inside Information Affect Sports Betting Odds?

open access: yesScottish Journal of Political Economy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We describe how insiders with superior information about potential outcomes of sporting events affect odds set by bookmakers, using a generalized version of a model due to Hyung‐Song Shin. The model has been cited as an explanation for the pattern of favorite‐longshot bias observed in fixed‐odds betting markets.

The Enhanced Literate Mind Hypothesis

open access: yesTopics in Cognitive Science, EarlyView.
Abstract In the present paper, we describe the Enhanced Literate Mind (ELM) hypothesis. As individuals learn to read and write, they are, from then on, exposed to extensive written‐language input and become literate. We propose that acquisition and proficient processing of written language (“literacy”) leads to, both, increased language knowledge as ...

Exploring neuronal mechanisms of osteosarcopenia in older adults

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend The mechanosensitive osteocytic network within the bone matrix acts as a receptor and plays a crucial role in the functional adaptation of bone to mechanical loading. Through mechanotransduction, osteocytes convert mechanical impulses into electrical signals, which are transmitted via afferent nerves to sympathetic preganglionic ...
