Unconstrained optimal control of regular languages
Automatica, 2003The present study deals with the theory, formulation, and validation of an unconstrained optimal control policy for finite state automata that may have already been subject to constraints such as control specifications. The synthesis procedure is quantitative and relies on a signed real measure of formal languages, which is based on a specified state ...

An Overview of Unconstrained Optimization
1994Developments in the theory and practice of unconstrained optimization are described. Both line search and trust region prototypes are explained and various algorithms based on the use of a quadratic model are outlined. The properties and implementation of the BFGS method are described in some detail and the current preference for this approach is ...

Recent advances in unconstrained optimization
Mathematical Programming, 1971We survey the development of algorithms and theory for the unconstrained optimization problem during the years 1967–1970. Therefore (except for one remark) the material is taken from papers that have already been published. This exception is an explanation of some numerical difficulties that can occur when using Davidon's (1959) variable metric ...

Unconstrained Optimization by Approximation of the Gradient Path
Mathematics of Operations Research, 1977A gradient-path oriented algorithm for unconstrained minimization, requiring first derivatives of the objective, is presented. The algorithm possesses the quadratic termination property and it is shown to converge to a stationary point of a continuously differentiable Function.

Few Topics in Unconstrained Optimization
2021Unconstrained optimization is, on the one hand, a classical topic in optimization, which goes back to the seventeenth century. On the other hand, it is a modern one, which undergone substantial transformation in the last few decades.

Criteria for Unconstrained Global Optimization
Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, 2007We develop criteria for the existence and uniqueness of the global minima of a continuous bounded function on a noncompact set. Special attention is given to the problem of parameter estimation via minimization of the sum of squares in nonlinear regression and maximum likelihood.

Unconstrained optimization based on homogeneous models
Mathematical Programming, 1973In this paper a generalized algorithm for unconstrained optimization based on homogeneous functions is presented. It is shown that this generalized algorithm reaches the minimum of a homogeneous function inn + 2 iterations and does not require finding the minimum on the one-dimensional search.

A new arc algorithm for unconstrained optimization
Mathematical Programming, 1978The gradient path of a real valued differentiable function is given by the solution of a system of differential equations. For a quadratic function the above equations are linear, resulting in a closed form solution. A quasi-Newton type algorithm for minimizing ann-dimensional differentiable function is presented.
