Evaluation and comparison of satellite precipitation estimates with reference to a local area in the Mediterranean Sea [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Precipitation is one of the major variables for many applications and disciplines related to water resources and the geophysical Earth system. Satellite retrieval systems, rain-gauge networks, and radar systems are complementary to each other in terms of

Dopamine: Don’t Underestimate the Force [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2020
Dopamine is implicated in reward processing and movement. A new study describes an unexpectedly tight relationship between dopamine activity and the forwards and backwards forces an animal exerts in response to rewards, suggesting a potential reconciliation of these two roles.

Parent Quality of Life at Two Years Following Their Child's Completion of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Treatment

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Parents of children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) often experience significant caregiver burden and disruption to their well‐being. While parent quality of life (QoL) during treatment is well characterized, little is known about outcomes during early survivorship.

LDAcoop: Integrating non‐linear population dynamics into the analysis of clonogenic growth in vitro

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Limiting dilution assays (LDAs) quantify clonogenic growth by seeding serial dilutions of cells and scoring wells for colony formation. The fraction of negative wells is plotted against cells seeded and analyzed using the non‐linear modeling of LDAcoop.

The Major Role of Anthropogenic Emission Underestimation in PM2.5 Estimation Uncertainty Over the Tibetan Plateau

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
In recent decades, the Tibetan Plateau (TP) has experienced a notable rise in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels, impacting its climate and ecology. However, accurately simulating PM2.5 concentrations on the TP remains challenging.

Histological underestimation of a 9-gauge stereotactic vacuum-assisted breast biopsy system compared with surgical excision at a tertiary hospital in South Africa

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Radiology, 2016
Background: Breast cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Certain lesions encountered on mammography require histological assessment of biopsy samples to identify benign versus malignant disease. Stereotactic vacuum-assisted breast

Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of single circulating tumor cells in the follow‐up of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Single circulating tumor cells (sCTCs) from high‐grade serous ovarian cancer patients were enriched, imaged, and genomically profiled using WGA and NGS at different time points during treatment. sCTCs revealed enrichment of alterations in Chromosomes 2, 7, and 12 as well as persistent or emerging oncogenic CNAs, supporting sCTC identity.

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Inaccuracies in survey reporting of alcohol consumption

open access: yesBMC Public Health, 2019
Background Alcohol consumption estimates in public health predominantly rely on self-reported survey data which is likely to underestimate consumption volume.

Crowd control: Reducing individual estimation bias by sharing biased social information.

open access: yesPLoS Computational Biology, 2021
Cognitive biases are widespread in humans and animals alike, and can sometimes be reinforced by social interactions. One prime bias in judgment and decision-making is the human tendency to underestimate large quantities.
