Aboveground herbivory elevates belowground rhizosphere volatile organic compound concentrations in ambient and polluted air, independent of volatile sampling methodology

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The effect of air pollution on plants is still underexplored, especially belowground. We used a field facility that released diesel exhaust and ozone at concentrations equivalent to those near a busy road in Reading, UK, to measure belowground gas exchange of Scots pine together with feeding by large pine weevils, a major pest of conifers.

A composite, host‐participatory haustorium links host compatibility to defence bifurcation in Alectra vogelii (Orobanchaceae)

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Parasitic weeds of the family Orobanchaceae are among the most damaging constraints on food production in the tropics, draining water and nutrients from their hosts and threatening the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers. Yellow witchweed (Alectra vogelii) can destroy entire legume harvests across sub‐Saharan Africa, where these crops are a ...

Policy Brief: Brazil's open ecosystems—Carbon stocks overlooked by climate finance

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The equitable recognition of the world's open ecosystems is critical for climate justice and societal well‐being. These ecosystems provide essential services, like carbon storage, water security, and biodiversity protection, that strengthen resilience to climate change. Yet, they remain overlooked in climate finance and policy frameworks that privilege

Carbon sequestration strategies for climate resilience: Sorghum‐based innovations for sustainable agriculture in dryland regions

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Climate change is intensifying heat, drought, and food insecurity, threatening dryland farming and carbon management worldwide. We reviewed research on sorghum, a drought‐adapted C4 crop, covering physiology, roots, biomass allocation, soil carbon, bioenergy, breeding, phenotyping, management, and policy.

Fragmentation Across Scales, Geography, and Climate Challenges in European Urban Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Research: A Bibliometric and Systematic Review

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT European urban climate change research lacks integration across scales, geography, and climate challenges, despite Europe's coordinated policy frameworks. Through a hybrid bibliometric and systematic review of 1528 studies (2010–2025) using Cortext Manager and PRISMA 2020 guidelines, this study maps the conceptual patterns, knowledge gaps, and

How Aligned Are Citizen Preferences With the 15‐Minute Cities Paradigm? An International Survey and K‐Means Clustering Study

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study investigates how citizens' mobility preferences align with the principles of the 15‐Minute City (15mC), addressing three research questions: what access times and transport modes citizens consider acceptable, whether mobility preference can be clustered, and which services are perceived incompatible with the 15mC.

The Myth of Decarbonized Oil: Technological Fixes, Climate Delay, and the Politics of Low‐Carbon Fossil Fuels

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The idea of “decarbonized oil” has become increasingly visible in climate, energy, and corporate transition debates as oil and gas actors seek to reconcile continued fossil fuel production with net‐zero commitments. This article offers a critical narrative review of the concept, asking what political work the idea of decarbonized oil performs ...

Assessing Environmental and Economic Performance for Port Hydrogen Fuel Transition: A Case Study of Vancouver Fraser Port Authority

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As society continues to develop, hydrogen has emerged as a promising fuel for maritime decarbonization. This study develops an integrated environmental and economic assessment framework for the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) by combining life‐cycle assessment, levelized cost analysis, and multi‐criteria decision analysis across 36 ...

Phasing Out Coal Power Through Cross‐Border Renewable Energy Trade in the Asia‐Pacific

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Coal remains the backbone of electricity generation in the Asia‐Pacific region, accounting for half of total regional output and two‐thirds of global coal‐fired capacity. The substantial environmental and public‐health externalities of coal highlight the urgent need to accelerate the renewable energy transition.
