Economics of Underground Gas Storage

The economic advantages of using underground gas storage to balance variations in gas load are illustrated here by comparing it with various other approaches: increasing pipeline flow gas purchases, increasing interruptible sales, and installing LNG or LPG peak-shaving facilities. All other methods run a poor race for a return on the investment dollar.

Dry Gas Injection or Underground Gas Storage

In almost depleted oil reservoir the high gas injection can help to produce additional oil, if the process is in immiscibility or miscibility conditions. By using this reservoir for underground storage of natural gas the substantial quantities of oil can be recover.

Certainly the views of the Management of Coastal Corporation’s Natural Gas Group on gas storage have been very favorable throughout the years, evidenced by our system companies having developed 25 storage fields and 340 Bcf of working storage capacity since 1941 for our own system needs.
