Darmstadt 1992 — the Understory [PDF]

open access: yesCircuit, 2010
Present at Darmstadt in 1992, this Canadian composer also had several of his works performed, notably by the celebrated violinist Irvine Arditti. He relates his nearly missed encounter with Helmut Lachenmann, and the friendships he made with other Canadian composers and performers.

Effects of overstory and understory vegetation on the understory light environment in mixed boreal forests [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Vegetation Science, 1998
Abstract. The percentage of above‐canopy Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (%PPFD) was measured at 0, 50 and 100 cm above the forest floor and above the main understory vegetation in stands of (1) pure Betula papyrifera (White birch), (2) pure Populus tremuloides (Trembling aspen), (3) mixed broad‐leaf‐conifer, (4) shade‐tolerant conifer and (5) pure

Adaptive Responses of Tropical Crops: A Multi‐Scale Omics Integrated Perspective

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tropical crops integrate genomic, morphological, physiological, and ecological adaptations to thrive under extreme and variable environments. This review highlights how natural selection, domestication, and breeding shape stress resilience, resource‐use strategies, and productivity in sugarcane, banana, cassava, rubber and oil palm, offering new routes

High‐elevation endemic plants predicted to lose habitat from changing climate in Washington State

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise High‐elevation plants face unique challenges from potential climate change impacts that will likely require upslope migration into increasingly smaller suitable habitat. This situation is particularly acute for endemic species that by definition occupy small geographic ranges.

Application of a novel schema for describing fossil fern foliage and investigating taxonomic and morphological change across the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary in western North America

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise The Chicxulub asteroid impact at the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) boundary triggered a mass extinction 66 million years ago. Ferns thrived in the aftermath of the extinction, evidenced by the well‐documented “fern spore spike.” However, fern macrofossil records across the K–Pg boundary are less understood.

Environmentally induced dynamics between intraindividual variation and trait means across vegetative, phenological, and floral traits

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Intraindividual variation in reiterated structures (e.g., leaves) represents an important dimension of phenotypic variation that contributes to functional diversity and the dynamics of ecological communities. It can be expressed differently across plant traits, but how environmental drivers affect intraindividual variation in different

Effects of understory characteristics on browsing patterns of roe deer in central European mountain forests

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2023
Selective browsing by deer on young trees may impede the management goal of increasing forest resilience against climate change and other disturbances.

Humans and platyrrhines share a pattern of articular variance

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Previous work has identified a pattern of articular shape variation in modern human limb joints, in which convex joint surfaces exhibit constrained variance relative to their more variable concave conarticulars. This pattern is notable given that joint morphogenesis is influenced by local biomechanical environments, which vary substantially ...

Adaptações estruturais de sete espécies ciófitas arbustivas de Floresta Ombrófila Densa

open access: yesHoehnea
RESUMO As espécies do subosque são adaptadas à condição de sombreamento imposta pelo dossel. O presente estudo caracterizou, por meio de atributos foliares, as estratégias utilizadas por diferentes espécies de subosque.

Comparative Assessment of Landsat‐8 and SPOT‐7 Satellite Data With Field Spectral Measurements for Estimating Plant Diversity in Sandy Grasslands

open access: yesBiological Diversity, EarlyView.
We compared Landsat‐8 OLI, SPOT, and hyperspectral data for estimating vascular plant diversity in China's Hunshandak Sandland. SPOT data showed the strongest correlation with alpha diversity, followed by hyperspectral data, with Landsat‐8 performing the weakest.
