A Networking Protocol for Underwater Acoustic Networks

2000
Abstract : There exists an increasing demand for reliable, high capacity Underwater Acoustic Networks (UANs), as evidenced by the large volume of research invested over the last decade in overcoming the difficulties inherent with propagation of information bearing signals through shallow water regions.

Study on MC-CDMA for Underwater Acoustic Networks

2008 International Conference on Computer Science and Software Engineering, 2008
In this paper, multiple access technique for the physical layer of underwater acoustic (UWA) networks is discussed. Considering the characteristics of acoustical channel and UWA networks, multi-carrier code division multiple access(MC-CDMA) method is chosen as the multiple access strategy in the design of an UWA network.

A note on CSMA performance in underwater acoustic networks

Computer Communications, 2015
Carrier sensing MAC protocols have limited utility in underwater acoustic networks because the propagation delay is not small relative to the packet duration. A recent publication shows simulated results that would appear superior to those predicted by accepted theoretical analysis.

Channel simulation for underwater acoustic communication network

Proceedings of the Seventh ACM International Conference on Underwater Networks and Systems - WUWNet '12, 2012
Significant advancements in underwater acoustic communication have been achieved in recent decades. In the dynamic ocean environment, various physical processes can significantly affect the communication channel. The time-varying underwater channel has both deterministic and stochastic features. Due to the dynamic environment and the complex properties

Development of a reconfigurable underwater acoustic networking testbed

Proceedings of the Seventh ACM International Conference on Underwater Networks and Systems - WUWNet '12, 2012
We present our ongoing work on developing a reconfigurable underwater acoustic (UW-A) networking testbed based on the Teledyne Benthos Telesonar SM-75 modem [1]. The SM-75 modem is customized to allow the research community to conduct advanced networking and communication experiments as follows.

Reliable and Opportunistic Transmissions for Underwater Acoustic Networks

IEEE Network, 2018
Acoustic waves propagate slowly in water, and time-varying UACs result in inevitably high bit error rate and packet loss rate. The long propagation delay and the error-prone nature of UACs impose challenges on reliable transmissions in UANs. In this article, we identify the challenges for reliable acoustic transmissions and propose a CL-FEC scheme ...

Protocol design issues in underwater acoustic networks

Computer Communications, 2011
In this paper we discuss issues related to the design of underwater acoustic network protocols which are tailored around, and leverage on, the differences between underwater acoustics and terrestrial radio. These differences span physical propagation and energy consumption, and influence the design of medium access control, routing and topology ...

Connecting with oceans using underwater acoustic networks

XRDS: Crossroads, The ACM Magazine for Students, 2014
Oceans cover a majority of our planet and are currently lacking in regards to exploration and technological innovations. One technology that can help enable more aquatic applications is underwater acoustic networks (UANs). This article discusses the current status of UANs, the new applications that can be provided, and the challenges faced by this ...

Distortion analysis of underwater acoustic sensor networks

2015 7th International Conference on New Technologies, Mobility and Security (NTMS), 2015
The paper studies the distortion performance of multihop underwater acoustic sensor networks. The network is composed of bottom mounted sensors and the sensor to sensor links experience Ricean fading. The distortion is evaluated for the case when there is interference from other sensors in the network.
