Phytoplankton Hotspot Prediction With an Unsupervised Spatial Community Model

open access: yes, 2017
Many interesting natural phenomena are sparsely distributed and discrete. Locating the hotspots of such sparsely distributed phenomena is often difficult because their density gradient is likely to be very noisy.

Probabilistic Reconstruction of Color for Species’ Classification Underwater [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Color is probably the most informative cue for object recognition and classification in natural scenes. Difference in shades can indicate to the biologist the potential for diversity of species or stress on the habitats. However, severe color distortions

Tumor‐stromal crosstalk and macrophage enrichment are associated with chemotherapy response in bladder cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Chemoresistance in bladder cancer: Macrophage recruitment associated with CXCL1, CXCL5 and CXCL8 expression is characteristic of Gemcitabine/Cisplatin (Gem/Cis) Non‐Responder tumors (right side) while Responder tumors did not show substantial tumor‐stromal crosstalk (left side). All biological icons are attributed to Bioicons: carcinoma, cancerous‐cell‐

A Underwater Sequence Image Dataset for Sharpness and Color Analysis

open access: yesSensors, 2022
The complex underwater environment usually leads to the problem of quality degradation in underwater images, and the distortion of sharpness and color are the main factors to the quality of underwater images.

Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser surface texturing significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) for marine applications. Optimal laser parameters reduce corrosion by 80% and enhance tensile strength by 25% and ductility by 15%.

Efficient Guided Wave Modelling for Tomographic Corrosion Mapping via One-Way Wavefield Extrapolation

open access: yesSensors
Mapping corrosion depths along pipeline sections using guided-wave-based tomographic methods is a challenging task. Accurate defect sizing depends heavily on the precision of the forward model in guided wave tomography.

Omnidirectional underwater surveying and telepresence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Exploratory dives are traditionally the first step for marine scientists to acquire information on a previously unknown area of scientific interest. Manned submersibles have been the platform of choice for such exploration, as they allow a high level ...

Harnessing Fungal Biowelding for Constructing Mycelium‐Engineered Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mycelium‐bound composites (MBCs) offer low‐carbon alternatives for construction, yet interfacial bonding remains a critical challenge. This review examines fungal biowelding as a biocompatible adhesive, elucidating mycelium‐mediated interfacial mechanisms and their role in material assembly. Strategies to optimize biowelding are discussed, highlighting

Improvement of Image Alignment Using Camera Attitude Information [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
We discuss a proposed technique for incorporation of information from a variety of sensors in a video imagery processing pipeline. The auxiliary information allows one to simplify computations, effectively reducing the number of independent parameters in

Duplex Stainless Steel Laser‐Surface Textured: Stability in Brine Solution

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Controlled laser‐surface treatment (LST) of duplex DSS2205 steel is performed to increase its stability in brine solution under cyclic electrochemical assays. The superior protection with respect to flat and smooth panels is attributed to the presence of FeCr2O4 as the main protective oxide layer in the LST surface, after corrosion tests. The stability
