Impact of undesirable outputs on the productivity of US airports

Transportation Research Part E: Logistics and Transportation Review, 2008
Abstract The paper assesses productivity of 56 US airports during the period 2000–2003. Unlike past work, this study models joint production of both desirable and undesirable outputs (i.e., delays) using the non-parametric directional output distance function. Results are compared to those from models that do not include undesirable outputs.

Multi-valued measures in DEA in the presence of undesirable outputs

Omega, 2020
Abstract Data envelopment analysis (DEA) evaluates the relative efficiency of a set of comparable decision making units (DMUs) with multiple performance measures (inputs and outputs). Classical DEA models rely on the assumption that each DMU can improve its performance by increasing its current output level and decreasing its current input levels ...

Nonparametric Productivity Analysis with Undesirable Outputs: Reply

American Journal of Agricultural Economics, 2003
Hailu and Veeman (2001) (henceforth HV) use both primal nonparametric (DEA) and dual nonparametric frontiers that include undesirable outputs. The dual frontier provides the tightest nonparametric outer-bound to the unknown underlying technology while the DEA frontier provides the tightest innerbound to the technology (Varian, Banker and Maindiratta ...

DEA Models with Undesirable Inputs, Intermediates, and Outputs

2015
In real applications involving the use of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models, undesirable inputs and outputs have been frequently encountered and addressed, e.g., via data transformation. These studies were scattered in the literature and often confined to some particular applications. In this paper, we present a systematic investigation concerning

Turkish bank efficiency: Bayesian estimation with undesirable outputs

Journal of Banking & Finance, 2013
This paper analyzes the productivity and efficiency of Turkish banks from 2002 to 2010. We obtained estimates of efficiency, productivity growth and efficiency growth using a Bayesian stochastic frontier approach and focused on accounting for Non-Performing Loans (NPLs) for use in our model.

Environmental assessment and dealing with undesirable outputs: DEA-based approach

International Journal of Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Optimisation, 2019
This paper discusses an indirect portion oriented approach based on a traditional data envelopment analysis (DEA), requiring a proportional reduction of undesirable outputs. The proposed technique prepares an accommodation of undesirable factors in their primary form.

Efficiency of Turkish Provincial General Hospitals with Mortality as Undesirable Output

2015
The authors present a directional distance model where quality of care is brought in by treating mortality in each hospital as a strongly disposable “bad output.” After deriving pure technical and scale inefficiencies under strong disposability, the authors derive “congestion” inefficiencies via allowing weak disposability.

Nonparametric Efficiency Analysis in the Presence of Undesirable Outputs

2013
