A Review of Undrained Strength in Direct Simple Shear

open access: yesSoils and Foundations, 1985
ABSTRACT Normalized undrained shear strengths from direct simple shear (DSS) tests conducted on 50 different clays are compared with strengths determined from triaxial shear tests. The DSS strength is typically observed to be an intermediate strength between triaxial compression and extension.

Undrained Shear Strength of Cement-Treated Soils

open access: yesSoils and Foundations, 2006
ABSTRACT In order to evaluate the effects of cementation on the mechanical properties of cement-treated soil, a series of isotropic consolidation and undrained triaxial compression shear tests were performed for cement-treated specimens of Ariake clay, Akita sand, Rokko Masado and Toyoura sand.

On the undrained shear strength of gassy clays

Computers and Geotechnics, 2005
Abstract The presence of methane gas will affect a soil’s strength, which will alter its resistance to submarine sliding and in turn impact offshore developments. This paper describes a constitutive model for determining the undrained shear strength of fine-grained gassy soils. The model results show that although the presence of gas has a beneficial

Undrained shear strength in the surficial weathered crust

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1987
Most geotechnical engineers feel that the undrained shear strength measured by the field vane in the surficial weathered crust cannot be fully mobilized during the failure of an embankment built of soft clay deposits. Consequently, the vane strength in the crust is generally reduced by some arbitrary means before stability calculations are performed ...
