Almost Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Representing Gravity in Global Models but Were Afraid to Ask

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 17, Issue 12, December 2025.
Abstract For over 60 years, an approximation involving spherical geopotentials has underlain the representation of gravity in global numerical models of Earth's atmosphere and oceans. This article explores how departures from sphericity can be allowed by assuming spheroidal geopotentials instead. A route to more accurate model formulation is indicated,

Pemodelan Geoid Lokal Universitas Diponegoro Semarang Studi Kasus: Universitas Diponegoro Semarang [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Geoid is called as an earth model which approach to the real earth surface. Furthermore, geoid is an gravity equipotential field or nivo field which coincide to the mean sea level and not disturb field (?) Geoid is referenced to ellipsoid because ...

Calving Mechanisms Inferred From Observations of Surface Depressions at Helheim Glacier, Greenland

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 130, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract Dynamical changes at the termini of tidewater glaciers may trigger sustained acceleration, thinning, and retreat, increasing a glacier's contribution to sea level rise. However, processes at the ice‐ocean interface occur across a range of spatial (cm to km) and temporal (minutes to years) scales, making these processes difficult to capture ...

Influence of Glacial Isostatic Adjustment on Intraplate Stress and Seismicity in Eastern North America in the Presence of Pre‐Existing Weak Zones

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 26, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract Eastern North America has hosted significant historical earthquakes, where seismicity clusters along tectonically inherited structures. Using the spherical finite‐element code CitcomSVE and fully 3D viscosity structure, we model the intraplate stress response to glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) using ICE‐6G, both with and without low ...

The Role of the Overriding Plate and Mantle Viscosity Structure on Deep Slab Morphology

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 26, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract Using 2D numerical subduction models, we compare the morphology of deep slabs in the presence of an oceanic or continental overriding plate and viscosity jumps at either 660 km or 1,000 km depth as suggested by the latest geoid inversions. We demonstrate that a continental plate, combined with a 1,000 km depth viscosity increase, promotes slab

The precise computation of geoid undulation differences with comparison to results obtained from the Global Positioning System

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 1984
Ellipsoidal height differences have been determined for 13 station pairs in the central Ohio region using measurements made with the Global Positioning System. This information was used to compute geoid undulation differences based on known orthometric heights.

Effects of the Last Quaternary Glacial Forebulge on Vertical Land Movement, Sea‐Level Change, and Lithospheric Stresses

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 63, Issue 3, September 2025.
Abstract A glacial forebulge is a bending‐related upheaval of the lithosphere outside a glaciated area that co‐occurs to the depression of the lithosphere below an ice sheet. The forebulge of the last glaciation attracted attention over more than one century, but quantitative descriptions on the geometry of the forebulge are rare.

Evaluation of GOCE-based global gravity field models over Japan after the full mission using free-air gravity anomalies and geoid undulations [PDF]

open access: yesEarth, Planets and Space, 2017
Abstract The performance of Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) global gravity field models (GGMs), at the end of GOCE mission covering 42 months, is evaluated using geoid undulations and free-air gravity anomalies over Japan, including six sub-regions (Hokkaido, north Honshu, central Honshu, west Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu)

Global Assessment of Lake Surface Morphology and Its Impact on Water Volume Estimation

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 61, Issue 7, July 2025.
Abstract Lake surface morphology, an essential yet underexplored feature of hydrological systems, remains poorly understood, including its effects on water volume estimation. This study investigates north‐south surface profiles of 147 lakes worldwide using ICESat‐2 altimetry data (2018–2024).
