eDNA Metabarcoding Reveals Microbial Community Composition in Tropical Mangrove Forests in Makassar, Indonesia. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
This study used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding with 18S rRNA markers to assess microbial diversity in the Lantebung Mangrove Forest, Makassar, Indonesia. It identified 103 microbial species across five kingdoms, revealing higher species richness in open‐water areas (P1) and greater individual abundance under mangrove canopy (P2).

Dorsal duplication of paw pads in the four limbs of a cat

open access: yesVeterinary Dermatology, Volume 34, Issue 4, Page 359-362, August 2023., 2023
An approximately one‐year‐old intact male domestic short hair cat was presented with plantigrade stance and dorsally duplicated paw pads in all limbs covered by hyperkeratotic material. True nails were rudimentary and located between the dorsal and ventral digital pads.

Prediction of fitness under different breeding designs in conservation programs

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, Volume 26, Issue 1, Page 86-102, February 2023., 2023
The quantification of both the inbreeding load and the purging coefficient, which measures the magnitude of purging, is of great relevance since they allow predicting the expected change in fitness under inbreeding, as has been shown in random mating populations.

Obliterative portal venopathy: A neglected and probably misdiagnosed disease with peculiar etiology in South America

open access: yesJGH Open, Volume 6, Issue 12, Page 904-909, December 2022., 2022
Classically described in the group of non‐cirrhotic portal hypertension, obliterative portal venopathy (OPV) causes are still unknown. Our aim is to describe the characteristics of 43 OPV patients and potential risk factors. Clinically significant portal hypertension was found in 28% of cases. The most frequent indication for liver biopsy was elevation

COI metabarcoding of large benthic Foraminifera: Method validation for application in ecological studies

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 11, November 2022., 2022
We test the correctness in retrieving foraminiferal communities by metabarcoding of mock communities, bulk‐DNA from coral reef sediment samples, and eDNA from their associated ethanol preservative using the recently sequenced cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) marker.

Roadside Dining: The Collective Movement Behavior of Sulawesi Moor Macaques in a Provisioning Context. [PDF]

open access: yesAm J Primatol
ABSTRACT How group‐living primates come to a consensus about navigating their environment is a result of their decision‐making processes. Although decision‐making has been examined in several primate taxa, it remains underexplored for primates living in anthropogenic landscapes. To shed light on consensus decision‐making and flexibility in this process,

Low‐Cost High‐Sensitive Plastic Optical Fiber‐Based Sensor for Detection of CO(NH2)2 Urea

open access: yesJournal of Sensors, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
In this research, a urea level sensor based on plastic optical fiber was made using the macro bending method and two kinds of configurations. The sensor is made with a gamma and band configuration with a variety of cladding, no cladding, and imperfection and immersed in the urine sample which has different urea. This is aimed at determining the optimal

Beneficial Effects of Bauhinia rufa Leaves on Oxidative Stress, Prevention, and Treatment of Obesity in High‐Fat Diet‐Fed C57BL/6 Mice

open access: yesOxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
Obesity is an epidemic disease worldwide, associated with oxidative stress and the development of several other diseases. Bauhinia rufa (Bong.) Steud. is a native Brazilian Cerrado medicinal plant popularly used for the treatment of obesity. In this context, we investigated the chemical composition of the methanolic extract of B. rufa leaves (MEBr) and

Continuous‐Flow Preparation of Benzotropolones: Combined Batch and Flow Synthesis of Epigenetic Modulators of the (JmjC)‐Containing Domain

open access: yesChemistrySelect, Volume 6, Issue 39, Page 10717-10721, October 20, 2021., 2021
Continuous flow chemistry technology has been used for the formation of benzotropolone core, the main structural motif of a family of polyphenolic natural products that presents very interesting biological activities. The article describes a robust and efficient methodology to access this type of structures and further demonstrates the suitability of ...
