Analysis of Concrete Failure on the Descending Branch of the Load-Displacement Curve

open access: yesCrystals, 2020
In this paper, load-displacement and stress-strain diagrams are considered for the uniaxial compression of concrete and under three-point bending. It is known that the destruction of such materials occurs on the descending branch of the load-displacement

A Dislocation Perspective on Strength and Toughness in Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Dislocations in ceramics enjoy a long but yet under‐appreciated history. The three research waves for dislocations in ceramics highlight the topic evolution over the last 90 years. This review focuses on the impact of dislocation on strength and toughness in ceramics.

Experimental Characterization of Mycelium‐Based Composites Under Multiple Loading Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines the mechanical response of mycelium‐based composites under compression, shear, and tension using mechanical testing and imaging methods. The comparison between unpressed and hot‐pressed specimens shows that hot pressing is associated with higher compression and shear stiffnesses.

Abnormal ferroelectric response and enhancement of piezoelectricity of PbTiO3 under uniaxial compression

open access: yes, 2008
The ferroelectricity of rhombohedral PbTiO3 under uniaxial compression is investigated from first-principles study. Upon compression, the ferroelectricity decreases until a critical stress of -29 GPa and then increases with a further increase of the ...

Compatibility of Methacrylate Based Resins Controls Interfacial Failure and Toughness in 3D‐Printed Multimaterial Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work shows that the mechanical performance of multimaterial digital light processing (DLP) printed thermoset composites is governed by resin compatibility and interfacial design rather than spatial patterning alone. Brittle and ductile resin combinations produced premature interfacial failure, while graded interfaces and mechanically compatible ...

Steel-Slag as Aggregate Substitute’s Influence to Concrete’s Shear Capacity An Experimental Approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The use of steel slag as a substitute to natural aggregates for concrete increases the compression strength and workability of fresh concrete mixes.

Thermal conductivity of single-crystal NaCl under uniaxial compression

open access: yes, 1983
The variation of the thermal conductivity of single-crystal NaCl under uniaxial compression is investigated by the dynamic hot-strip method. Over a stress range of 0-1.0 MPa no effect whatsoever is found. The relative change in thermal conductivity under

Non-local energy based fatigue life calculation method under multiaxial variable amplitude loadings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Reliable design of industrial components against high cycle multiaxial fatigue requires a model capable of predicting both stress gradient and load type effects. Indeed, taking into account gradient effects is of prior importance for the applicability of

Meso-Scale Failure of Freezing–Thawing Damage of Concrete under Uniaxial Compression

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
In this study, discrete element PFC3D software was used to simulate the uniaxial compression of C30 concrete specimen models after freezing−thawing damage.

Comparison of Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Energy Absorbers Under Uniaxial Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates LCD 3D printed Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) structures as mechanical energy absorbers. By comparing various base designs and layered combinations under uniaxial compression, it identifies that a Diamond‐Gyroid sandwich structure offers superior performance.
