Delayed failure in rock loaded in uniaxial compression

The long-term response to sustained compressive loading of two crystalline hard rocks of the Canadian Shield has been investigated. Static fatigue tests conducted on granite and anorthosite have shown that in a humid environment the long-term strengths of these crystalline igneous rocks could be less than 60 percent of their dry instantaneous strengths.

Stress-strain relations for uniaxial loading

The mathematical expressions for the stress strain relations of metals in uniaxial loading, which have been proposed by Ludwik and Hollomon and find a more general application now, are discussed. It is elucidated that these empirical formulae cannot agree with the essential behaviour of a metal during uniform straining.

Dislocation structure of the magnesium nanocrystal in uniaxial loading

We report on molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations of compression loading of nanocrystalline magnesium modeled by the embedded-atom method (EAM) potential. It is shown that plastic deformation is by basal slip and (102) twinning. The formation of stable configurations of dislocation grids is observed.
