A doença do vírus Ebola foi identificada em 1976 na África. Surgiu como a pior epidemia da história em 2013 no sul da Guiné, atingindo, em seguida, os países vizinhos Libéria e Serra Leoa. Causou cerca de 11 mil mortes e só foi considerada contida em junho de 2016. É uma doença grave, cuja taxa de letalidade pode chegar aos 90%.
