Can Unionid Mortality Be Estimated From Dead Shells? A Simulation Study

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 35, Issue 1, January 2025.
ABSTRACT Environmentally persistent structures of dead individuals represent an unexplored avenue to estimate some population parameters for endangered species that cannot sustain lethal sampling. We used simulations to explore the feasibility of applying catch‐curve analysis from dead unionid shells to estimate mortality.

Description and potential sources of a shell deformity in North American freshwater mussels (Unionoida)

open access: yesJournal of Aquatic Animal Health, Volume 36, Issue 4, Page 310-320, December 2024.
Abstract Objective Freshwater mussels of the order Unionoida are among the most imperiled taxa in North America, and many species are undergoing enigmatic decline without fully understood causation. Disease pathology and parasitology have been identified as areas with significant knowledge gaps in relation to these declines.

A dataset of individual wet weights of benthic macroinvertebrates

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 9, Issue 6, Page 696-715, December 2024.
Abstract Biomass estimates are crucial for modeling and understanding energy flow through ecosystems. Many modeling frameworks rely on published body weights of organisms to convert density estimates to biomass. However, published body weight data are limited to few taxa in a limited number of systems. Here we present mean individual weights for common
