Linguistic units and units of speech production

Speech Communication, 1987
Abstract Links are needed to bridge the gap between the analysis of speech as a set of discrete, ordered but durationless linguistic unit and analyses of the continuously changing acoustic signals, defined along a time axis. Current recognition and synthesis devices do not make good use of the structure imposed by speech production processes on the ...

Modular Units Inside Cyclotomic Units

The Annals of Mathematics, 1980
If H is an abelian extension of an imaginary quadratic field K, then the group of units of H contains an important subgroup consisting of modular units. These are obtained as special values of certain modular functions, and are analogous to the cyclotomic units of an abelian extension of Q.

Opacity units and opacity-unit millilitres

Journal of Biological Standardization, 1980
Two hitherto unreported consequences of adopting the 5th International Reference Preparation of Opacity (5th IRP) are pointed out: (1) The previously-used expression ‘O.U./ml’ as an index of bacterial concentration is no longer meaningful, since the 5th IRP explicitly defines the Opacity Unit ( without per ml ) as a measure of concentration.

Herbrand's unit theorem and relative units

Commentarii mathematici Universitatis Sancti Pauli = Rikkyo Daigaku sugaku zasshi, 1994
Herbrand's unit theorem [\textit{J. Herbrand}, Nouvelle démonstration et généralisation d'un théorème de Minkowski, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris 191, 1282-1285 (1930)] is modified for abelian extensions. The author applies the theorem to improve the results concerning the index of the group generated by relative units.
