Abstract Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) was considered to be an obscure, indolent, neoplastic disorder, occurring predominantly in elderly men of Mediterranean or Eastern European descent until 1981 when a combined epidemic of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and KS was described in young men of homosexual or bisexual orientation in New York and California.
