Flight Demonstration of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Traffic Management (UTM) at Technical Capability Level 3 [PDF]

open access: yes2019 IEEE/AIAA 38th Digital Avionics Systems Conference (DASC), 2019
The goal of the Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Traffic Management (UTM) effort at NASA is to enable access to low-altitude airspace for small UAS. This goal is being achieved partly through partnerships that NASA has developed with the FAA, other government agencies, the UAS stakeholder community, and the designated FAA UAS Test Sites.

Structured Urban Airspace Capacity Analysis: Four Drone Delivery Cases

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
A route network-based urban airspace is one of the initial operational concepts of managing the high-density very low-level (VLL) urban airspace for unmanned aircraft system (UAS) traffic management (UTM).

Impacts of Space Weather‐Induced Satellite Navigation Errors on UAV Path Planning and Energy Consumption

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Space weather disturbances can degrade satellite navigation accuracy, posing operational challenges for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) missions that require precise path planning. This study investigates the impact of space weather‐induced horizontal navigation errors on UAV flight distance and energy consumption through a simulation‐based ...

A Distributed Framework for Traffic Flow Management in the Presence of Unmanned Aircraft [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The integration of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the airspace system is a key challenge facing air traffic management today. An important aspect of this challenge is how to determine and manage 4-dimensional trajectories for both manned and ...

Space Weather and Low‐Altitude Drone Economy

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are becoming integral to the emerging low‐altitude economy, operating primarily below 3,000 m for applications such as logistics, inspection, precision agriculture, and urban air mobility. The safe and reliable operation of UAVs depends critically on communication, navigation, and surveillance (CNS) systems ...

A Simulation Framework for Fast Design Space Exploration of Unmanned Air System Traffic Management Policies

open access: yes, 2019
The number of daily small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) operations in uncontrolled low altitude airspace is expected to reach into the millions. UAS Traffic Management (UTM) is an emerging concept aiming at the safe and efficient management of such ...

Principles for Applying AI to Address the Challenges of Scaling Digital Twins

open access: yesDigital Twins and Applications, Volume 3, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
ABSTRACT Despite the increasing affordability of data processing and storage and the enhancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies in recent years, scalability and adoption continue to be a challenge when it comes to digital twins (DTs). Common challenges that are often cited include the effort of designing and building DTs, high

Evaluation of Unmanned-Aerial-Vehicle-Integrated Control System Efficiency on the Basis of Generalized Multiplicative Criterion

open access: yesInventions, 2023
An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-integrated control system is a set of functionally independent subsystems of the ground and space segments interacting with each other under the conditions of the stochastic nature of the external environment. There is an

Spatio‐Temporal cGAN Based Channel Estimation for Low‐Altitude Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

open access: yesElectronics Letters, Volume 62, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
Reliable channel estimation in low‐altitude ISAC is challenged by UAV‐induced fast‐varying and non‐stationary channels. We present an ST‐cGAN framework that jointly models spatial and temporal features under conditional adversarial learning, achieving superior accuracy and robustness compared with conventional and deep learning baselines.
