Designing unreinforced masonry models
ACM Transactions on Graphics, 2013We present a complete design pipeline that allows non-expert users to design and analyze masonry structures without any structural knowledge. We optimize the force layouts both geometrically and topologically, finding a self-supported structure that is as close as possible to a given target surface.

Strengthening of Unreinforced Masonry Buildings
Journal of Structural Engineering, 1986A method is proposed for rehabilitation and strengthening of multi-wythe unreinforced brick masonry walls in buildings where they are the primary structural element for transferring load to the foundation. Shear tests were performed to determine the strength of newly manufactured small-scale specimens made with cement grout, sand/polyester grouts, and ...

Damage Thresholds in Unreinforced Masonry
Australian Journal of Structural Engineering, 2008In various regions of Australia, mines and quarries employ blasting, which some home owners believe causes cracking of non-structural components such as brick veneer. The first part of this paper reports on properties affecting damage thresholds of masonry subjected to shear load at a localised unit/mortar scale using off-axis prism tests and triplet ...

In‐plane strength of unreinforced masonry piers
Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics, 2008AbstractThe definition of adequate simplified models to assess the in‐plane load‐bearing capacity of masonry piers, in terms of both strength and displacement, plays a fundamental role in the seismic verification of masonry buildings. In this paper, a critical review of the most widespread strength criteria present in the literature and codes to ...

Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis of Unreinforced Masonry
Journal of Structural Engineering, 1998A comprehensive analytical model has been developed and presented in this paper to study the response of unreinforced masonry to in-plane dynamic loads, including earthquake loads. The analysis has been implemented in a nonlinear finite element program. Masonry is treated as a nonlinear homogeneous orthotropic material. A failure envelope has also been

Seismic Assessment of Unreinforced Masonry Buildings
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2016The first case study used in this work is an existing seven-storey unreinforced masonry building (representing a typical residential building located in the district of L ́Example in Barcelona). The accuracy of the non-linear static procedures was evaluated by comparison with non-linear dynamic analyses for seven ground motion records and different ...

Retrofitting unreinforced masonry
Botswana Journal of Technology, 2005Unreinforced masonry (URM) walls are prone to failure and collapse when subjected to out-of-plane loads caused by earthquake or high wind pressures. This represents one of the main causes of injuries and loss of human lives and property in different parts of the world.

RESPONSE OF UNREINFORCED MASONRY BUILDINGS
Journal of Earthquake Engineering, 1997A summary of dynamic measurements are presented that illustrate relations between linear seismic demand and true nonlinear response of unreinforced masonry buildings with flexible diaphragms and rocking piers subjected to a series of simulated earthquake motions.
