Out-of-plane dynamic response of a tuff masonry wall. Shaking table testing and numerical simulation [PDF]
The out-of-plane dynamic response of a masonry element is investigated, both experimentally and numerically. The results of shaking table tests on a tuff masonry wall, subjected to harmonic acceleration histories, are presented.

Seismic risk mitigation has become a crucial issue due to the great number of casualties and large economic losses registered after recent earthquakes. In particular, unreinforced masonry constructions built before modern seismic codes, common in Italy ...

Multiscale computational first order homogenization of thick shells for the analysis of out-of-plane loaded masonry walls [PDF]
This work presents a multiscale method based on computational homogenization for the analysis of general heterogeneous thick shell structures, with special focus on periodic brick-masonry walls.

Evaluation of seismic displacement demand for unreinforced masonry shear walls
Unreinforced, non-engineered low-strength brick masonry structures comprise a large percentage of buildings in the Himalayan region and have been extensively damaged in recent earthquakes.

Assessment of Selected Models for FRP-Retrofitted URM Walls under In-Plane Loads
One way to improve a structure’s total load-bearing capacity during an earthquake is to apply fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) to unreinforced walls. The study discusses the use of FRP to strengthen unreinforced masonry (URM) structures.

Prevalence of New Zealand’s unreinforced masonry buildings
Unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings remain New Zealand's most earthquake prone class of building. New Zealand URM buildings are classified into typologies, based on their general structural configuration. Seven typologies are presented, and their relative prevalence, age and locations are identified.

Challenges and perspectives for the protection of masonry structures in historic centers: the role of innovative materials and techniques [PDF]
Lessons learned from natural events which caused severe damage to existing constructions have repeatedly shown the high vulnerability of historically important masonry, often worsened by inaccurate or dubious applications of modern or innovative ...

Masonry buildings are generally vulnerable to seismic action, as evidenced extensively in past earthquakes. In order to improve their seismic performance, several modifications have been introduced, such as reinforcing or confining the masonry.

Finite element nonlinear analysis of high-rise unreinforced masonry building
A simple efficient algorithm based on compressive diagonal strength of unreinforced masonry walls is presented to determine capacity curve of unreinforced masonry building. The compressive strength is calculated based on a new close form solution.
