Hydrodynamics of scallop locomotion: unsteady fluid forces on clapping shells

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1996
A potential flow model has been formulated for scallop swimming. Under the smalldisturbance approximation, the problem of the unsteady flow past the wing-like configuration of a scallop is separated into two linear sub-problems: the steady lifting problem and the unsteady symmetric thickness problem.

Force acting on a particle in unsteady flow of a pseudoplastic fluid

Journal of Applied Mechanics and Technical Physics, 2016
The accelerated flow of a pseudoplastic fluid around a quiescent sphere at Reynolds numbers Re = 0–200 and dimensionless acceleration Ga = 10–104 is studied by numerical simulation. It is shown that the analytical expression of the added mass force for an ideal fluid is appropriate for a pseudoplastic fluid. An expression for calculating the hereditary

Prediction of fluid forces acting on a hand model in unsteady flow conditions

Journal of Biomechanics, 2008
The aim of this study was to develop a method to predict fluid forces acting on the human hand in unsteady flow swimming conditions. A mechanical system consisting of a pulley and chain mechanism and load cell was constructed to rotate a hand model in fluid flows. To measure the angular displacement of the hand model a potentiometer was attached to the

Unsteady Fluid Force Acting on Oscillating Square-Section Cylinder

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1995
The difference between experimentally measured lift forces under dynamic condition and quasi-steady condition is termed as an unsteady force, in this technical note. Analysis shows the magnitude of the unsteady force increases with the maximum angle of incidence, αmax encountered by the square cylinder during a cycle of transverse oscillation in a ...

Problems in Forced Unsteady Fluid Mechanics.

1981
Abstract : Forced unsteady fluid flows are examined from the point of view of positive implications of the time dependency. Particular problems examined in a forced unsteady mode are jets, wind tunnels, wings, ramps and diffusers, dump combustors and vortex structure.

Direct Measurement of Unsteady Fluid Dynamic Forces for a Hovering Dragonfly

AIAA Journal, 2005
An experimental study of the aerodynamics of a dragonfly in hovering flight is conducted. Measurements are made on a mechanical flapping wing apparatus that simulates, in water, the Reynolds number and reduced frequency of the tandem wing configuration on a dragonfly.

Unsteady Fluid Forces Acting on a Pitching Foil

Journal of Fluid Machinery, 2005
An oscillating foil can produce a driving force through the generation of a reversed vortex street, and it can be expected to be a new highly effective propulsion system. A simple pitching foil model was made and it was operated within a water channel.
