Simultaneous inversion of mantle properties and initial conditions using an adjoint of mantle convection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Through the assimilation of present-day mantle seismic structure, adjoint methods can be used to constrain the structure of the mantle at earlier times, i.e., mantle initial conditions.

Block Motion Changes in Japan Triggered by the 2011 Great Tohoku Earthquake [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Plate motions are governed by equilibrium between basal and edge forces. Great earthquakes may induce differential static stress changes across tectonic plates, enabling a new equilibrium state.

Enemy release: loss of parasites in invasive freshwater bivalves Sinanodonta woodiana and Corbicula fluminea

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Invasive freshwater bivalves harm native species, ecosystems and biodiversity, and incur economic costs. The enemy release hypothesis posits that invasive species are released from enemies during the invasion process, giving them a competitive advantage in the new environment.

ScS shear-wave splitting in the lowermost mantle: Practical challenges and new global measurements

open access: yesSeismica
Many regions of the Earth's mantle are seismically anisotropic, including portions of the lowermost mantle, which may indicate deformation due to convective flow.

Noble gases confirm plume-related mantle degassing beneath Southern Africa

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Southern Africa is characterised by unusually elevated topography and abnormal heat flow. This can be explained by thermal perturbation of the mantle, but the origin of this is unclear.

Extremely high He isotope ratios in MORB-source mantle from the proto-Iceland plume [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The high 3He/4He ratio of volcanic rocks thought to be derived from mantle plumes is taken as evidence for the existence of a mantle reservoir that has remained largely undegassed since the Earth's accretion.

Evidence From Microscopy and U–Pb Geochronology as a Clue to the Influence of the Cretaceous Magmatism in the Diagenesis of Pre‐Salt Carbonate Reservoirs in the Santos Basin (Brazil)

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
Carbonates from Santos Basin revealed U–Pb ages correlated with basalt ages (A), suggesting that they were formed during magmatic events. These events placed hot CO2 in the reservoir, which, when mixed with carbonate‐rich cold water (B), led to thermal convection, enabling the formation of the U contained in the carbonates.

Inference of the Timescale‐Dependent Apparent Viscosity Structure in the Upper Mantle Beneath Greenland

open access: yesAGU Advances, 2023
Contemporary crustal uplift and relative sea level (RSL) change in Greenland is caused by the response of the solid Earth to ongoing and historical ice mass change.

Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotope results from ODP Leg 187: Evidence for mantle dynamics of the Australian-Antarctic Discordance and origin of the Indian MORB source [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
New high precision PIMMS Hf and Pb isotope data for 14–28 Ma basalts recovered during ODP Leg 187 are compared with zero-age dredge samples from the Australian-Antarctic Discordance (AAD).
