Transforaminal Endoscopic Thoracic Discectomy for Upper Thoracic Spine
2020Due to complexity of neural and vascular structures, surgical treatment of upper thoracic spine is challenging. Open surgical approach for thoracic disc herniation includes laminectomy, transpedicular approach, costotransversectomy, and transthoracic approach.

Posttraumatic total dislocation of the upper thoracic spine
Surgical Neurology, 2004Difficulty in proper visualization of the upper thoracic spine in plain radiographs allows for injuries at this level to be missed, especially in a busy trauma center. This window of error is increased when the patient presents with no symptoms or signs of neurologic or spinal involvement, as upper thoracic dislocations commonly present early. The ...

Translaminar screw fixation in the upper thoracic spine
Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, 2006Object The use of pedicle screws (PSs) for instrument-assisted fusion in the cervical and thoracic spine has increased in recent years, allowing smaller constructs with improved biomechanical stability and repositioning possibilities. In the smaller pedicles of the upper thoracic spine, the placement of PSs can be challenging and may increase the risk

The Management of Upper Thoracic Spine Tumors
Operative Techniques in Orthopaedics, 2011The surgical management of primary and metastatic spine tumors is an essential treatment modality. Because the most spine tumors are metastatic, surgical management of spine tumors is often palliative. However, when indicated, decompression and stabilization can lead to improved quality of life.

Upper thoracic spine arthroplasty via the anterior approach
Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, 2010Significant progress has been made in lumbar and cervical disc replacement therapy. Several cervical disc prostheses have recently gained FDA approval. Although arthroplasty has not been previously described in the thoracic spine, selected patients with long-segment fusion to the level of C-7 have altered cervicothoracic and upper thoracic biomechanics

Trans-axillary Approach for Upper Thoracic Spine
2020The anterior aspect of the upper thoracic spine is difficult to expose, and many techniques have been described. Most of the previously described techniques are extensile and require osteotomy of the clavicle or sternotomy. A thoracic lateral approach requires elevation of the scapula with extensile muscle dissection and rib resection, leading to ...

Palpation of the upper thoracic spine: An observer reliability study
Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, 2002To assess the intraobserver reliability (in terms of hour-to-hour and day-to-day reliability) and the interobserver reliability with 3 palpation procedures for the detection of spinal biomechanic dysfunction in the upper 8 segments of the thoracic spine.A repeated-measures design was used in all substudies.Department of Nuclear Medicine, Odense ...

Subluxation of the upper thoracic spine in rheumatoid arthritis
Skeletal Radiology, 1993Only single cases with rheumatoid arthritis of the thoracic spine with vertebral subluxation have been reported to date. In a review of 100 patients with severe rheumatoid arthritis who had undergone occipitocervical fusion, arthritis of the upper thoracic spine with subluxation was discovered on conventional radiographs in four patients.

Semi-Open Needle Biopsy of the Upper Thoracic Spine
Spine, 1994A semi-open needle technique allowing safe biopsy of the upper thoracic spine is described. It has been performed in five cases with an accuracy of 100% and no complications. The authors recommend its use between T1 and T4, or where the normal anatomy is very distorted.
