Abstract The pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa, PPM) is a major defoliator in Mediterranean pine forests, with broad ecological and socioeconomic impacts. While vertebrate predators of its eggs, larvae, pupae, and imagos have been well documented, predation on adult females by mammals has not been previously described.

Biologically active substances of bird skin: a review
Bird skin has a number of specific properties. The uropygial gland is a significant skin gland in many species. The secretion of this gland is particularly necessary for maintaining physical characteristics, including feather waterproofing.

Pruning for biodiversity: Drivers of cavity formation and use in Mediterranean holm oak woodlands
Our study emphasizes the role of both tree and cavity age in the long‐term establishment of cavity‐dependent vertebrates in holm oak woodlands. In the context of climate change—where holm oak trees are expected to replace more mesic, soft‐wooded tree species in the Mediterranean region—the persistence of cavity‐dependent vertebrate biodiversity will ...

Past research and future directions in understanding how birds use their sense of smell
Our understanding of the functional importance of olfaction to birds has improved over the past 60 years, largely as the result of experimental studies testing how birds use their sense of smell in different contexts. As it is impossible to measure directly which odours birds can detect, we rely on measuring behavioural responses to scent cues or ...

Many birds schedule their activity to a specific phase of the diel (24‐h) light–dark cycle. Two notable exceptions are the nocturnal migration of many otherwise diurnal songbirds and the diverse activity patterns of birds during the continuous light above the Polar Circles during summer.

Ecophysiology has enhanced our understanding of avian migration, yet many aspects of how these processes interrelate are still unclear. Partially migratory populations provide an ideal framework for its study in the wild, since resident and migratory ...

In climatically suitable regions across Europe, vineyards can be the dominant perennial crop type. While many wine-growing landscapes are intensively managed, they may still be an attractive habitat for a wide range of bird species.

Abstract Seed dispersal by endozoochory is essential to plant dynamics, but once released in the feces, the seeds face a hostile environment that is not always favorable to germination. Indeed, feces may contain inhibitors, have high seed density, and be densely structured.
