Improved lightning model: Application to discuss the characteristics of upward lightning
Atmospheric Research, 2019Abstract A stochastic discharge parameterization scheme of upward lightning is presented and embedded into an existing fine resolution two-dimensional thundercloud electrification and lightning model. At present, our lightning model can simulate not only intra-cloud (IC) lightning and cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning but also upward lightning.

A shielding theory for upward lightning
IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1993A shielding theory based on the assumption that the occurrence of lightning strokes on the Japan sea coast in winter is due to the inception of upward leaders from tall structures is proposed. The percentage of lightning strokes to high structures observed shows reasonable agreement with values calculated by the theory.

Blue jets are beams of blue light propagating from the tops of active thunderclouds up to altitudes of ∼50 km. They resemble tall trees with quasi-vertical trunk and filamentary branches. Their apparent speeds are in the range of 10 s to 100 s km/s. Other events, having essentially lower terminal altitudes (

Probability of lightning hits to tall structures taking account of upward lightning
2010 Asia-Pacific International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility, 2010It was revealed that serious lightning faults of high voltage power transmission lines in winter along the coastal area of the Sea of Japan were due to upward lightning initiated from transmission towers. Wind turbines in the same region, reportedly suffer from high lightning fault rate, must also generate frequent upward lightning.

Assessing currents of upward lightning measured in tropical regions
Atmospheric Research, 2014Abstract Negative upward lightning events in tropical regions are discussed based on the records of six currents measured recently at a short instrumented tower in Brazil. Only one event exhibited a return stroke following the initial stage. According to available correlated records of electric-field change, all events were triggered by nearby ...

Upward lightning discharges: An update
2011 7th Asia-Pacific International Conference on Lightning, 2011Lightning discharges initiated by leaders that originate from stationary grounded objects, usually towers, and propagate upward, toward overhead thunderclouds, are reviewed. Upward, or object-initiated, lightning discharges always involve an initial stage that may or may not be followed by downward-leader/upward-return-stroke sequences.
