Influence of coastal upwelling on the air–sea gas exchange of CO2 in a Baltic Sea Basin

open access: yesTellus: Series B, Chemical and Physical Meteorology, 2013
During coastal upwelling cold water from the ocean interior with high CO2 concentration is brought up to the surface, allowing this water to interact with the atmosphere. This sets the stage for events with potentially altered sea–air CO2 fluxes.

A CONTRIBUTION TO THE THEORY OF UPWELLING [PDF]

open access: yes, 1953
Abstract : The equations defining upwelling are derived by considering a wind having both constant force and direction and blowing steadily and uniformly in a belt of finite width L parallel to an infinitely long straight coast. The sea water is assumed to be of uniform density.

Emergence, spread, and impact of high‐pathogenicity avian influenza H5 in wild birds and mammals of South America and Antarctica

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The currently circulating high‐pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) virus of the subtype H5 causes variable illness and death in wild and domestic birds and mammals, as well as in humans. This virus evolved from the Goose/Guangdong lineage of the HPAI H5 virus, which emerged in commercial poultry in China in 1996, spilled over into wild birds,

Improvements for better scaling of locally managed marine areas

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract To protect and restore ecosystems at the speed and scale required to meet current environmental challenges, a greater understanding of how conservation initiatives spread from existing to new adopters is required. According to the diffusion of innovation theory, positive adopter‐to‐peer communication is a powerful driver of innovation spread ...

Retrieval of surface temperature by remote sensing [PDF]

open access: yes
A simple procedure and computer program were developed for retrieving the surface temperature from the measurement of upwelling infrared radiance in a single spectral region in the atmosphere.

Does nature shape risk preferences? Evidence from Chile, Norway, and Tanzania

open access: yesEconomic Inquiry, Volume 63, Issue 2, Page 568-590, April 2025.
Abstract Does exposure to a more risky environment affect risk preferences? Going beyond single‐case study evidence, we report results from five surveys conducted in three countries and link this with administrative data to study whether a link between exposure and preferences is detectable and widespread. We find no evidence for endogenous preferences

Monsoon-Driven Coastal Upwelling Off Zamboanga Peninsula, Philippines [PDF]

open access: yesOceanography, 2011
Cooler temperatures and elevated chlorophyll a, indicative of upwelling, are observed off the coast of Zamboanga Peninsula, Philippines. This upwelling is driven primarily by offshore Ekman transport as the Northeast Monsoon winds blow parallel along the
